I have read the Safety 1st onSide Air Convertible Car Seat is pretty compact and has good ratings. I considered this, but got the My Ride because I loved the 40 rf and 65 ff option, however, I have an SUV so size wasn't a big concern for me.

My old boss used this brand too for her 3 kids.

Is your DD big enough for a 5pt harness booster? We have a Britax Frontier 85 and a Graco Nautilus and I like both and they are not that bulky.

We got the Bitrax Roundabout for my moms car and it is def pretty compact. We have the Bitrax Marathon in our car based on ratings and wanted something rated just as good for my moms car but felt bad having it take up so much roomChat Icon so we did the roundabout and I highly recommend it.

The Sunshine kids car seats are great, the latch system works until a higher weight limit, and they have a 65 pound and 85 pound version. I just got one for my son so we can fit 3 carseats across in a sedan.

We have the Britax roundabout in DH's two door car. It's a great seat.

I just got the MyRide also and it is HUGE! I have a Lincoln town car and it will fit ok. (I'm the grandma) My daughter has a Toyota Matrix and we tried it in her car too. It's big but it will fit. This came highly recommended by Chris (he installs car seats for the county in Hicksville) we might look into another seat before I get this one installed.

Re: Can anyone rec a smaller but excellent car seat?

What is the problem with the MyRide that you want a smaller seat? Too tall? Too wide? I have yet to find a vehicle the MyRide doesn't fit in, and that includes small cars like the Civic.

A couple seats recommended by others (Complete Air, Radian) are actually no smaller than the MyRide. The Radian with the RF boot on it actually has a bigger footprint than the MyRide because it can not be installed more upright in most vehicles, (the boot, which is required, prevents that). Ditto for the Complete Air.
Also, I no longer can recommend the Radian due to others having incompatibility issues with the seat and the latch loosening.

The Roundabout is pretty comparable to the MyRide sizewise. The trick for any seat is having it installed properly. Once a child can hold his/her head up (about 4ish months) then the seat can be installed more upright. Convertibles seem so much bigger than infant seats but can actually take up less room front to back because you can install more upright.

Forward facing, MYRIDE teeters on the seat, barely fits on it (the base). That can't be safe (can it)?

To add to the problem, it pretty much hits the front seat which would be really uncomfortable for the child's legs as well as the passenger in front of the seat. I dont believe you can adjust the recline of the seat at all, which is why it takes up so much space forward facing. It just sticks out so much b/c of the steep recline. Again, not adjustible, right or did we miss something?

I think it's b/c MyRIDE leans back more b/c they have a higher rear facing weight limit...I have a Britax in my other truck and the seat is more upright.

Re: Can anyone rec a smaller but excellent car seat?

MR isn't my first choice for a FF child. It's a great seat for RF, but install FF can be a bit tricky.

With your DC already FF, I wouldn't waste the money on a convertible and with your DC's current stats, I would look at a combination seats

Graco Nautilus and Britax Frontier are two of my favorites currently on the market
