Can anyone recommend a good cookbook

for an amateur chef here. Nothing fancy just looking for some new easy recipes for dinner.

Hmmmm....

One really good cookbook for someone that is a new cook is The Joy of Cooking it has some basic recipes and some more difficult ones but it tells you simple things like corn on the cob and breaded chicken cutlets.

Another really good cookbook is the Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book again it is a fairly basic type of cookbook...ie: Baked Ziti, Baked Ham, Clam Chowder, etc..but it will also tell you how to hard boil an egg or give you a recipe for a souffle.

I have had both of these in my collection for years and these are the ones that I get the most use out of.

I agree. That is a really good cookbook. I also really like some of the Williams and Sonoma cookbooks. I have two really good Australian cookbooks- Everyday in the Kitchen and The Australian Women's Weekly Modern Classics.

I agree with "The Joy of Cooking" and the Better Homes and Gardens one. Not only do they give you a TON of recipes, they actually teach you "how" to cook.

I also love the Rachael Ray books, particulary 365.

I don't cook much, but DH swears by the Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook, and the Good Housekeeping Step by Step Cookbook.

He's also been eyeing teh Better Homes and Garden one.

Re: Can anyone recommend a good cookbook

I have found a bunch of yummy recipes in EveryDay Food!!

But my favorite cookbooks are the Weight Watchers ones.. even if you dont follow WWs, the recipes are pretty easy, and the food is super yummy... My favorite 3 are The complete WW's cookbook, My Program Turnaround, and the new Comfort Foods one...

Re: Can anyone recommend a good cookbook

not sure how "into" cooking you are, but i was just watching the travel channel on TV and they were interviewing the guy who wrote this book-i think i am going to order it on amazon...recipes from different countries-Italy, Spain, China, Greece-looked really interesting & recipes looked simple.

Good Housekeeping makes a lot of cookbooks. I recently bought their vegetarian meals book.
It has lots of simple recipes and it has pictures of each meal.
When I shop for a cookbook, I need to see what it will look like before I make it.

I love Giada's cookbooks (Everyday Italian is great) and Jamie Oliver's (aka: The Naked Chef). I find them both easy but really delicious!

I agree with the Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade cookbooks. They are fantastic cause you use alot of store bought ingredients which cuts your cooking time down. Most of the recipes are very easy!

Try the American Test Kitchen cookbook. Those recipes are all testedd and perfected by a panel of cooks. They even have a show on pbs on Sundays.

And they also give tips on what kitchen wares to buy.
