Can anyone recommend a good paying blue collar job?

DH wants to start looking for another job and I was hoping someone here can help.
He is presently an auto-mechanic and also has a little bit of experience on construction.
He would rather do physical work than sit at a desk.
Any ideas? TIA! Chat Icon

I know Ray isn't a fan of commuting, but Local 608 baby. Carpenter's Union. The money is great, plus they train you. There are also unions on LI, but the work isn't as steady as NYC.

Also, there is an open house coming up for the LIRR. Check the website, not sure when it is.

If he has the experience tell him to try one of the NASCAR teams. Yes, I am totally predictable but think of how cool it would be! Chat Icon They pay would probably be great, too.

eta: I don't know if it qualifies as blue collar but it is manual labor.

What is Local 25?

We live out East, so he needs something this way.

He would never travel to NYC for ConEd

Construction Inspection can be a great field with good income potential - especially if he becomes NICET cetifiied - the higher your certification level the higher your potential income

It would take some planning and course work info

I believe you have to be a level II to work on NYSDOT jobs

Smaller firms may be willing to hire and train.

Some firms will lay off Inspectors in the winter when work is slow

I would be hesitant to recommend Local 3 as a career for someone starting out. There is more of a shift towards using scabs on the job & CWA has edged in on Local 3 work.

I would suggest the LIRR. You can't beat the benefits, the pay will be there & the job security is fantastic.

From what I've seen the most financially successful blue collar workers, start their own businesses early on (in their 20s).

eta. What about the DOT?

Yes, my father and my brother are in 608. It's hard to get in, but he shoudl give it a whirl. they have a great apprentice program. you don't make tons as an apprentice, but once you make it to a journeyman you can make about $40 an hour and benefits (which are taken out of your check.. . you get health which is a GREAT plan, dental/vision, pension and annuity.

If he wants to twist wrenches he should search www.myyellow.com , www.roadway.com they are often looking for mechanics and it is a Teamster job.

My DH just left his position as a manager at Home Depot (Flushing). They are the WORST company to work for.

Agree. And the same for Local 25 where my husband is an electrician. The work is steady for the first 5 years when you are an apprentice - but there are currently a whole lot of journeymen out of work.
