Can anyone recommend an oncologist?
My aunt (through marriage) just found out today that her beloved brother has colon cancer. Her SIL is looking for an oncologist, preferably affiliated with Sloan Kettering and possibly specializing in colon cancer.
Please...if you could spare some prayers, it would be much appreciated.
My aunt is like a sister to me. Her brother means everything to her. Their parents are deceased....their mother was hit by an oil truck during a snow storm on Steinway street and killed. Their father died 6 months later from cancer and a broken heart.
Thank you for any recommendations, and for your prayers.

My uncle is a colon cancer survivor, but unfortunately he was treated in NC at Duke University Hospital.
My mom is a breast cancer survivor - I can ask her who her oncologist was...

Re: Can anyone recommend an oncologist?
Hi, I'm truly sorry to hear about your aunt. My father passed away from liver cancer in July. It is a horrible ordeal and she is so lucky to have your support.
You may not need a referral for Sloan Kettering. You can actually just go on their website and it will tell you what insurance they take and then also, how you can self-refer a patient and request an appointment.
The first thing to do is to get familiar with your aunt's insurance, and what referrals are needed.
My father had horrible insurance and he had to go to his GP, who then referred him to an in-network general oncologist who then had to refer him to a liver oncologist.
We wasted a lot of time going directly to Sloan only to find out that that was not the way to do it under my father's insurance.
Here are some helpful links to Memorial Sloan.

But, definitely, I would say the first step is to find out how his insurance works.
Good luck and feel free to FM me with questions.

Re: Can anyone recommend an oncologist?
I am sorry that you are going through this.
First, check the Sloan Kettering website. My DH was treated there (in NYC and in Commack) two years ago for testicular cancer. He received amazing care.
Sloan Kettering specializes in treating a myriad of cancers, colon cancer is one of them. You can contact Sloan in NYC and they should be able to provide you with all the information you will need.
There is a Sloan Kettering satellite in Commack, but it is for treatment of established patients. DH received his chemotherapy there, and goes there now for follow-ups. The people that work there are terrific!
Best of luck to your aunt's brother.

Re: Can anyone recommend an oncologist?
My mom has stomach cancer - she just had the surgery two months ago Her surgeon is Dr. James Sullivan in Great Neck (he works out of NSUH) and she is going to be seeing Dr. Weiner for the chemo. I don't know if this is of any help to you....and many prayers for you and your family - this is an extremely difficult battle.
