Can babies be allergic to pets?
My MIL has cats and whenever we've been there DS seems to get a bit stuffy. Now that we've been there overnight he has this hacky cough, which reminds me of my hacky allergic to cats cough. I'm nervous about stayin another few nights through the wake and funeral. His temp hasn't increased over his normal teething temp. At 6 months can he already be showing allergies? Can I get him tested? TIA!!!!!!

Re: Can babies be allergic to pets?
My son showed signs that young of being allergic to my MIL's dogs. I am highly allergic to dogs and cats, and the first time we were there after he was born, he ended up with red welts all over his body. He's gotten better as he gets older, but he still breaks out.

Re: Can babies be allergic to pets?
It's a little to early to tell. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs and Matteo had breathing problems last year and MIL blamed the pets. The dr. said it was too early to test him for allergies and he was probably too young to have developed any relating to animals.
Now this year, he is 2 and we had him tested. He came up negative for all animals but the doctor said that doesn't mean he still can't develop them in the future.

A lot of dr.'s will tell you that enviornmental allergies are most likely to start after age 3. That being said, my DD was 10 months old and severly allergic to our dog. Tests confirmed it - The allergist said it was rare but does happen.

Re: Can babies be allergic to pets?
Not really. Statistically most children dont show allergies till over 3 yrs old.
Any exceptions are very rare.

Kelly, I think he can show allergic signs. I would call the ped (if you have time) and ask. Just keep an eye on him

Re: Can babies be allergic to pets?
My son has had a lot of breathing problems and we were worried about it being the cat or dog. He was in the hopital at almost 10months for labored breathing and they did an allergy test there (the pediatrician didn't do it before because they don't like to test them so young and it's a lot of blood to take). They did only a couple of things to keep the amount of blood down, but it turned out he wasn't allergic. But it is possible.

Re: Can babies be allergic to pets?
Yes - Dh and I have bad allergies and our ped said DD could develop or show allergies to anything (pets, dust etc) at anytime. So yes your child could be allergic to a pet at 6 months.

I am so allergic to cats, but years of injections, I can tolerate them for awhile.
Josh gets puffy and teary eyed around them.
