Can I just vent about my industry for awhile?

Ok...so where else are you expected..I mean where else is it even LEGAL to work for hours and hours for NO PAY, or for WELL under min. wage. If you want to make money you have to find a way to join the UNION, and pay INSANE dues, but if you do, then you're facing much more intense competition and your career could be over by joining the union.

As a director, no one will hire you if they haven't seen your work, no one can see your work unless someone will hire you.

And the only jobs I can qualify for right now are unpaid, or underpaid. HOW IS THAT ALLOWED?

It's actually COSTING me money to work right now, because even though I am reimbursed for transportation (I get a free monthly metrocard...whoopeeee), the amount of money I'm getting for the job is probably going to be LESS than what I end up spending on my kit (tape measures, emergency sewing kits, gaffer's tape, other supplies)

My first year in my business I earned a whopping $1,200.

Needless to say, I lived off of credit cards. After getting started though, i was able to pay it all off and get comfortable again.

You can do it...stick it out and it will all pay off for you in the end. From what I read, you love what you do so DONT GIVE UP!!!

my fh is going through something similar. he is currently training to be an engineer for the lirr. which pays extremely well. but since he is training, he gets paid as a trainee. and he pays union dues to both the engineers union and conductors union, since that is how he started.

hopefully, he'll complete training in Oct and officially be an engineer. after that, teh hell starts. long hours, odd hours etc. but we know it wil pay off.

just keep your chin up

the so-called "paying your dues" stinks, but good things come to those who do it.

Best of luck to you!
