Can I lie about my new start date?
Got a new job (YAY!). I am giving notice today (2wks) but not starting until Mar 10th for a week off in-between. Can I lie when I give notice and say I am starting 3/3, so that my current boss can't ask me to 'give more time' here? I didn't know if this was something they could check out, etc..
Basically, i'd like that extra week, since lord knows when I'll get a week off, with a new job starting and all..
Advice appreciated, thanks! I don't want to say i'll be home that week to my current boss, otherwise he'll def ask me to come in to help (its our month-end close that i'll be shirking out of). I figure if he asks then I can 'see what I can do' and maybe give him a couple of days (I know he'll need the help, which is why I put my start date on Mar 10), but I DEF don't want to work the full 3rd week at my current job..
Sorry if this is rambling/confusing, but I don't have much time to write. Any advice appreciated.. Thanks!!

Re: Can I lie about my new start date?
I just recently had the same situation, but for different reasons, had to "alter" the start date. I don't see a problem. You are giving your two weeks notice and that is customary and it is considerate. I don't think they need to know what you are doing in between. Many people take a "break" between jobs, so, it is not unusual. Good luck with the new job!

Re: Can I lie about my new start date?
giving two weeks is a courtesy so staying for longer is not necessary...some people don't even give that courtesy. so i think fibbign about your start date is fine -- i can totally understand why you want the week off. And not for nothing, if it were me, I think I'd have mental probs leaving one job on friday and starting a new one on monday with no break, even a day or two, inbetween.

Re: Can I lie about my new start date?
Thanks! Yea, I have only been here 6mos (but its been a looooong 6mos). I hated it from the start, and I didn't take a good break between jobs (was at my last job 7 years), and I sometimes wonder it that had an affect. Which is why I want my head nice and clear before the next one. I have to shake off my current boss/job and hopefully have a good start (can't keep job hopping like this!).
Thanks so much!!!

Depending on your position they can often ask you to stay longer (for example, in most places I've worked, Directors have to give a month's notice), but it's really not an enforced requirement.

You don't have to explain anything.
You gave your 2 weeks notice as a courtesy and to show your professionalism. That's really not their business if you even have another job or not.

IMO, you can quit and leave the same day. I've done it before, so has my DH.
when an employer fires someone, they get zero notice. if you don't need them for a reference, don't worry about it.
if I were you, I would give them a week's notice, at most. you will really appreciate the time off!

I wouldn't even mention the start date of your new job...give your 2 weeks notice and leave it at that.
Congrats on the new job!

Yep, just give your 2 weeks and be done with it. The conversation shouldn't go further than that.
Also, it's a good idea to leave on good terms. Down the road, you may need them as a reference.
Don't volunteer any other info.
