Can I request to NOT have an internal sono?

I will be going for my 7 week sono on thursday and the past 2 have been internal which I understand, but it makes me feel so crampy, then overly paranoid that something is wrong. Do they have to do an internal sono at 7 weeks or can it just be a normal sono on my belly?

It depends, when you're that early, sometimes they need to do the internal in order to see what they need to see. Everyone's body/uterus is different, sometimes you can see the baby and the HB doing the external, sometimes they need to get "in there" to get a more accurate picture of what's going on.

Re: Can I request to NOT have an internal sono?

they likely can't see anything with a belly sono until later......

but as a patient, you DO have the right to refuse any testing/procedure. they may be able to hear the heart beat, although that too may be too faint at 7 weeks w/o using an internal sono.......

it's odd that the internal sono caused cramping... maybe they're being too rough on you? If it were me in your situation, I'd personally have the internal, but prior to then, I'd voice my concerns about how the procedure affects me, and hopefully, they'll be a bit more careful.....

I agree. Sometimes the internal you get a clearer picture. When my little bean wasn't cooporating for my 13 wk sono, they tried everything. The internal is what worked.

I had a sono at 7 weeks 4 days and it was an external. You can ask the dr. to try it first. Good luck!Chat Icon

I would just explain to them your concerns, did they say that the internal causes cramping. The only reason they do the internal is b/c that early on it's harder for them to see what is going on.

I think this is exaclty what I am going to do. I will mention that it makes me crampy and maybe they can be a little more gentle. Thanks ladies!!
