can she have some?? (MIL story..long)
so we were at a family gtg yesterday for DH's side...his mom had DD and was showing her off...I was eating some dinner...i look back and she was letting DD try and drink something from her cup...i just sat there thinking maybes its water...well she looks at me and asks if she can have some...so i asked what it was...oh its juice (not watered down AT ALL)...NO she cant have juice!!! shes 5.5 months and hasnt even started cereal, why in the world would you give her juice? I kept it cool, really its what i expect from her...but seriously lets think a little here!
I told her that I wont be giving DD juice anytime soon...I see no need for it...she just liked the look of the neon orange cup MIL was drinking from...she could have cared less about what was in it!
I proceeded to tell her that I am going to try and give DD orangic food as I was reading the ingredients to the regular rice cereal and i couldnt believe everything that was in it! (thats a whole other post though)
I think she will be trouble when DD is older giving her things i would really like to keep her away from

Maybe she just doesn't know? When I had my first child, my mother kept talking about giving him some cereal - he was very little. Turns out they were giving cereal (on a spoon) at 1 month old when I was a baby!! 1 month! So times have changed but she was not immersed in the childcare of any other kids before I had mine so she wasn't aware that it's practically unheard of to do so now.

That is frustrating. I feel like I'm going to have the same issues with my MIL.

DD is your child and you definately have a right to be mad, but at the same time, a couple sips of juice, ice cream, whatever are not really going to hurt her!
Their generation gave juice very early, my dad asked me when Christopher could have it when he was 9 weeks old! And sure enough, at birthday parties, I turn around for a second and my dad is giving him ice cream cake, or whole carrots. It is just the nature of family!
I know it isn't what you wanted, but it isn't going to hurt her either

I wouldn't worry about it so much, it was probably only a few sips.

I agree, I would say something but then let it go.....don't make it a huge issue

Re: can she have some?? (MIL story..long)
I guess i should have specified that I did let it go...for me anyway...just stated that no she was not to have any and that was the end of it.
just figured a lot of girls on here could relate with this...and i do realize that they did this differently back then...which is why i have also been very open with both my mom and MIL of what usually happens now and how I will be doing things.

Re: can she have some?? (MIL story..long)
I will have this issue with my IL's myself as DD gets older, but as I recently told my mom - for the amount of hours in the course of an entire year that DD will be anywhere near them, it won't amount to much.
My mom commented on how she used to get frustrated with my dad's mother b/c she'd offer cookies on every visit, no actual food, just cookies.
I'm not sure though if your situation may lend itself for your DC to be around your MIL more. I'm doing all I can to limit DD's time with my IL's, they're a little off. Certainly won't be much time at all without my presence. My sister babysits for us when we need, so I see no reason to ask my MIL... ever! Or I'll ask friends with kids.

Re: can she have some?? (MIL story..long)
Juice is not half as bad as what I found my MIL giving my DS at 9 months old.....NUTELLA!!!! Wrong on so many levels. I let her have it for that one. But the point is that no one should give your child anything without asking you first.

Re: can she have some?? (MIL story..long)
I just wanted to add one more thing. When I was a little kid my grandmother let me eat sugar cubes! I'd walk over to where she kept them for coffee and eat them! Were my parents thrilled? No. But at the same time, they didn't make a big deal out of it. And I've never even had a cavity!
It is just grandparents!

Re: can she have some?? (MIL story..long)
I remember going through these same issues with my MIL. Looking back now, I think it was more about respecting the fact that *I* am the mom more than anything else.
Although we still have issues when she plys my kids with everything their heart (or stomach's) desire, now I can see it's a fine line between being "helpful" and "interfering". I truly believe that being a MIL is harder than being a mom.
