Can someone explain to me...
WHY movie produces completely change books when they are making them into a movie?
I eagerly awaited both The Other Boleyn Girl and Confessions of a Shopaholic, only to find:
The Other Boleyn Girl had like 1 scene from the book in it. Other than the title, there was little resemblance to the book.
Confessions was set in AMERICA?????? Yes, I know in book 2 Becky goes to America, but come on she's BRITISH. Luke wasn't even a rich head of PR, but an ordinary working man, and head of Sucessful Saving (Becky's boss)!!! Not to mention that Suze knew all about Becky's debt and helped her hide it, don't even get me started on the shoppers AAA.
I just don't understand how you can take a great story and completely change it, and the author is ok with the changes! I know for the sake of time, they have to eliminate, but I still think the movie plot should bear resemblance to the book
I will say though, that having watched The Time Traveler's wife tonight (which is why I'm thinking about this), I was pleased with the movie. Most of the scenes and characters were in line with the story.
Does this bother anyone else?

Re: Can someone explain to me...
Yes, and this is exactly why I rarely go see a movie if I've already read the book. When I read a book, I get an image of that book in my head. When I see the movie, I am getting someone elses image, and it totally ruins it for me. Plus I think a lot of it is what you said, about not having enough time to really flesh out the story. Even Gone With The Wind, which I did happen to see and thought it was fabulous, didnt do justice to the book, even though it was 4 hours long. They left out whole characters and time periods in her life.

ITA!!!
I waited so long for Shopaholic to be turned into a movie and I was devastated (ok, maybe not devastated, but seriously disappointed!) when I saw the film. All of the changes were awful and over the top. Hated that she was American, hated the shoppers AAA, basically hated all of it
Haven't seen the Time Traveler's Wife yet because it is one of my favorite books and I'm nervous it will suck as much as Shopaholic.

TTW is a decent movie. Most of the book is there, although they did tweak the ending slightly. I think I only said "that's not what happens in the book" once or twice.
I'm more nervous because both SOMTHING BORROWED and THE HUNGER GAMES are being turned into movies, and if they do a shopaholic on those, I'm never watching a movie of a book again!

That drives me insane. I think the worst offender was My Sister's Keeper. I was so angry when I left that movie

I kid you not, I was just coming back to this board to add this movie to the list! Just saw it recently (thank you Netflix!) and it was awful. I cannot believe the way it ended!!

DH, who never read the book, went with me too see the movie. After the movie ended I told him how it truly ends in the book. His response "If we were to watch that I think every one in the movie theater would go jump off a cliff. It is just too sad to watch."
And while I guess he had a point. The whole point of the book was how Anna wound up helping Kate.
I was pizzed, disappointed, and frustrated when I left that movie.

I agree and usually stay away from movies that we books I read. They always frustrate me with their changes.
