We have an expanded cape.

Down stairs is a living room, kitchen , full bath, small bedroom, larger bedroom. Off the kitchen we have a backroom extension which is a dining/sitting room.

Upstairs we have 2 large bedrooms and a full bath.

The back of our cape is expanded. So the back walls of the bedrooms are straight up and down where the front walls are slanted in.

We also have a full basement.

I'm not sure if that helped.

I would just google pics of them so you can get a visual of all the types. Many capes have been expanded so much around here that many of them dont even look like capes anymore.

I think it really depends on the house just from my experience house hunting. There are many different types of capes, colonials, splits. High Ranch & ranch all seem to be the same layout. Some more bedrooms then others.

We have a 2 car split. First floor is the dining room, kitchen, living room. Second floor we have 3 bedrooms, a main bath and a master bath. Downstairs we have a den, sunroom, powder room & access to the garage. Then a full basement.

This is a pretty good reference

I'm a huge fan of Craftsman style homes.. but 'actual' picture on the page isn't the best one. The descriptions are pretty apt though!
