Re: Can someone help me with planting flowers

my mom gardens all the time. she uses a trowel and a rake thing. if you ask in the planting center at HD, they can help you with other questions.

First of all, how much sun do you get in the area that you will be planting? That really determines what flowers you can use. Impatients like the shade, they cannot tolerate a full on southern exposure... they will fry. New Guinea impatients are a lot more sun tolerant, they lok similar but their leaves are different.

Tools- if you are planting in containers, easier because you don't get the weeds, you really only need a trowel.

Soil, yes you need potting or planting soil that contains fertilizer and extra nutrients. When the flowers are transferred they will be in shock for the first few days. I also suggest you by Miracle Grow and water the plants with the Miracle grow mixed with water (see label for directions) right after you plant them.
The soil comes in 25 lbs. bags which doesn't really cover a lot. They are about $2.50-$3.00 a bag. I bought 5 bags yesterday for 5 planters.

Dig up the grass, turn over the soil, take out any rocks, weeds, etc. and put down about 6 inches of the potting soil. If you add mulch to the area after planting it will cut down on the weeds. You can get different colored mulch to coordinate with your exterior. They should have bags of mulch near the potting soil.

When planting... pop the plant out of the individual container of the "flat" and gently pull the roots so that you break the uniformity of the shape they took while in the container. This is important so that the roots will now take to the soil.

Spacing- they will grow so a good 4 inches between every plant. It will look sparse now but in a few weeks they will really fill out.

Watering- depends upon the temp outside and rain we get. For the first few weeks they do need water about every other day.

My only tip is know which direction your house faces... southern exposure can only take full sun plants like marigolds. You will find tags on all of the plants that tell you how much sun it can take.

Good luck.

wow thank you soo much!!!!
actually, after i posted this question i ended up going ot my local hardare store- i found miracle grow soil that you mix with your normal soil.
i ripped the grass up, used one of those mini rakes to clear the way and remove rocks and weeds, then i dumped the miracle grow infused soil on top and mixed it with my soil that i loosened. i only planted a very narrow line to line my short walkway so i bought only one bag of that miracle grow soil.

i ended up planting petunias- they said they were for a full sun exposure- which is exactly what the front of my house is... all day the sun beats down - i open my front door and the door is always steaming hot.

i spaced them about 10-12" apart then put red mulch on top

to be honest i feel so much better after reading your post because it sounds like i did almost exactly what you told me to - and i am only reading this response now

thank you so much for taking the time to write that
i hope they grow nice! i will let you know!!!
