can someone please explain getting induced?
my dr. mentioned both cervadil and pitocin. How do they give you both? through the iv? She said they are done on different days though, so i'd be in the hospital for an extra 1/2 day if i got both.

Re: can someone please explain getting induced?
the cervidel ripens your cervix which they do first. Sometimes that's all you need and you end up giong into labor. Otherwise they give pitocin the following day to bring on contractions. So from what I know the cervidel works on cervix...the pitocin (which is what we naturally make in our own bodies as well) brings on contractions. The pitocin is sometimes given even if the women is naturally in labor but is not progressing fast enough. It makes contractions come more frequently and it is said to be mroe painful because of that. Well...we get epidurals for that. hope this helps. good luck!

Re: can someone please explain getting induced?
karen i was induced please feel free to call me FM me i can answer any questions you have but in short the cervidil is a gel that is put directly on your cervix to soften it it will stay there for 12 hours some hospitals let you stay with it in some will send you home then after 12 hours it is remmoved and they check to see if your cervix is softened if it has they will start the pitocin through your iv if it hasent they will do another round of cervidil they can do this 3 times if no softening a c section will be done. the pitocin will gratually be increased every 1/2 hour until you are in full blown labor. hope this helps

Re: can someone please explain getting induced?
thank you! i thought thats what the cervadil was..okay...so they would be able to tell after giving me that if i'd need a c-section or not instead of having me labor and push for hours and then do a c-section. interesting....cuz the dr. did mention the possibility of having to have one.
Well....i'm just gonna hope i go into labor on my own before then, if not then there is at least an end to this and i'll soon see my baby!

Re: can someone please explain getting induced?
I was induced also. They first inserted the cervadil- which is put into you like a tampon. It is a gel that ripens your cervix. That can stay in you for up to 12 hours- and they can do that 3 times. The pitocin is started through your IV- and basically makes your contractions stronger and more regular- making them more productive!
In my case, they did cervadil twice. After the first round, I was 70% effaced and 2cm dilated. They inserted it again, and 12 hours later, nothing had changed. So they started pitocin, and broke my water, and that made my contractions regular and stronger.
If you have any questions, feel free to FM me!

Normally, they will not let you labor for a long time and then do a c-section.
The way my induction worked was...I got the cervadil the night before at 9pm...the next morning at 7am, the cervadil was removed and I was started on pitocin
My doctor had told me that if my labor stalled (like if I was let's say 1cm for over an hour with no dialation after being on th pitocin) they were going to do a c-section
I wound up with a c-section after 6.5 hours of pitocin and I was only a fingertip dialated. My dd's heartrate was also going down with my contractions so a c-section was the right choice for me
I had a GREAT experience, don't worry
best of luck

Re: can someone please explain getting induced?
I was induced with cervadil around 9pm and DH was told to go away and come back in the morning as I would not really do anything until then...boy was the doc wrong!! my original cervadil came out by accident around 11.30pm and the nurse went to get the doc...her arrived about 25 mins later and instead of inserting another round said "get her to the L&D she is ready to go"...which I was but I opted for the epidural which slowed things down so DD wasnt born until 4.30....
All in all a great experience but dont be surprised if the cervadil works faster than the doc anticipates.
Good luck

Re: can someone please explain getting induced?
Just wondering . . . has anyone been induced w/o cervadil? I asked my doc about this and she said she doesn't use cervadil -- just pitocin.
I'm 4 days past due and we'll be going for an induction Monday if nothing happens on its own before then.

Re: can someone please explain getting induced?
does the cervadil hurt at all? Do they give you an iv at the same time, or are you able to eat something light?
Samnjenna-i think they give you the cervadil if you are not 100% effaced..If you are and you just arent' dilated then i think they would just give you pitocin. i could be wrong though.

Re: can someone please explain getting induced?
I was supposed to get induced. The dr said to come in at 7pm on Thursday night for the ceravidl suppositiory. Then he said he would start pitocin the Friday morning following.
I went into labor that Wednesday night

The cervadil (inserted kinda like a tampon) made me very crampy and sore. I didn't eat since mone was inserted at 7pm. The gave me Ambien and I slept the whole night.
