Can someone tell me if there is a diff between these 2 vaccines?

h. influenzae type b
and the prevnar/comvax ( hib-heb)?

I am trying to figure out what vaccines DD is due for and in her immunization chart they have both of these checked off and with the same date given.

are these the same thing? b/c she is given them separately? Chat Icon

Yes, there is.

Prevnar is for the Pneumococcus bacteria (sp?))

Comvax is the HIB/Hep B combined.

HIB is just HIB (Haemophilus influenzae type b)

I know it is so confusing!

Re: Can someone tell me if there is a diff between these 2 vaccines?

ok just did some major research and want to add incase any new mommies have questions.

Prevnar as others stated is to prevent menigitis, pneumococcal and other diseases.

Comvax is a combination shot of HIB ( h. influenzae type b)and Hep B ( hepatitis B).

on my doctors immunization records they have in the same box prevnar and underneath comvax. so tomorrow I am going to ask when they write in that box which vaccine is that for- it better just be for the Prevnar or there will some issues! DD has had separate shots of hep b and Hib so they better not be giving her a double vaccine.

Please be careful and 2008 CDC guidelines changed a bit.

Also the MMR and Varicella is now a combo shot called Proquad. I am def requesting separate and not till she goes to school ( nursery)

HTH anyone who may have been confused with all this vaccination schedule.

oh and Hib besides being recalled in 12/07 by Merck if your DC has had 3 primary shots of it by 6 months old the next one is at 15 months old and is a booster shot at that time. this is again only if your DC has had a series of 3 shots by age 6 months, my DD had her 3rd one at 9 months and next one now is 15 months.

Dtap guidelines changed too. the 4th shot can be given at 12 months if it has been at least 6 months since the 3rd shot. then after that not till 4-6 yrs old.

these are all based on if your DC is on schedule it is totally different if you are on a catch up/delayed schedule.

HTH.
