Can they do this?
I'm on maternity leave. Word at my job is that they're cutting salaries in half but implementing commission (which will take 3-6 months before anything is received) as well as reducing our meager health benefits. Several coworkers have already taken cuts.
No one has reached out to me to tell me my salary is being cut. Do I have any recourse coming back from maternity?

I'm not an HR person, but my head tells me that being on FMLA doesn't mean anything with regards to your salary. It's just ensuring you will still have a job when you get back. As for whether you have any recourse, I'd say no. If they're cutting salaries, they're cutting salaries. I was at a job that did this, naturally I couldn't afford the cut so I moved on and luckily found a job before the cuts took affect.

From my understanding of it, they cannot do anything to just your job, but if this is something that is company wide, then it will also apply to you

Re: Can they do this?
Employers can really do whatever they want. Especially in this day and age, unfortunately.
Many people are desperate and they know that, so especially if it saves THEM money, they will take that over a good employee.
I also have known of situations where companies have gotten rid of people by offering them "an equivalent job" when they returned from FML, but it was an equivalent job that SUCKED and the employer knew the person would not stay.
The employer was not doing anything illegal since they still offered them a spot.
