I have the Canon Rebel, I love it! I want a newer one though, mine was a hand me down from my dad who bought the new Rebel XT

Mine is discontinued. It's a Nikon D70. The newer version, I believe, is the Nikon D40x.
I would say any Nikon or Canon is the way to go.

I bought thisNikon D40x with the 18-135 mm lens just a few weeks ago. Looks like it comes with a free memory card too now which is helpful, I had to order that separately. I loooove it. This my first time using a high end camera and the pictues have been so beautiful. All SLRs are big, but this is the smallest of them which makes it easier to use -- I could barely fit my hand around some of the others I tried.

The megapixels. D40 is 6.something / D40X is 10.something
Other then that I believe it is the same camera.

Whatever you get, upgrade the lens. That will make the biggest difference. The lower the aperture, the better the portraits.
