can we eat cold cuts?
i just read somewhere that pregnant women should avoid cold cuts. This is what I've been eating for the past 2 months for lunch my doc never said anything about not eating them.
Have you ladies heard of this????

Re: can we eat coldcuts?
Yes, heat them for a few seconds as I have been told . Also stay away from the pork cold cuts because they can have nitrates in them which is not good for the baby.

Re: can we eat cold cuts?
Yup, my doctor advised me not to. I did cheat though. Everything in moderation is okay.
I also think it may be okay if they are heated up.

Re: can we eat cold cuts?
call your doctor and ask for their stance on the topic....they are the ones ultimately in charge of your health and the baby's health too...
if they say they are okay - then enjoy! their opinion is the only one that matters!

You will be fine!
I have also read to heat it up because if the meat has been laying around ( like if you got your sandwich at a deli that no one goes to, or a dirty place , not that you would , but still) there could be bacteria on the meat.
If you got your cold cuts at a busy supermarket or a deli chances are they don't leave their meat laying around , they keep it in the fridge when its not being sliced and they have a high turn over.
There are so many things I read about what to eat and what not to, don't worry if your DR did not say anything ( neither did mine) then its FINE

They tell you not to eat cold cuts because of a risk of listeria - cold cuts aren't inherently bad for you (apart from the fact that some have lots of salt) but they could give you a bacterial infection/illness. But if you've been eating them and haven't been sick, you're probably fine. Here's a link that tells you how you might feel if you did in fact get listeriosis. http://health.lifestyle.yahoo.ca/condition_info_details.asp?disease_id=346

I beleive ( but I am not 100% sure) that in NYS , legally all cheese in eating establishments HAS to be pasturized. I always ask , and if they don't know I don't risk it .
I get mine at the supermarket, where it says on the container that it is.

Re: can we eat cold cuts?
you may hear not to eat cold cuts but it's because if just 1 person has gotten listeria from it, they have to report it. it's basically them saving their own butts. you totally can eat cold cuts, just heat them up a little bit. my dr said just don't go to subway and eat their cold cuts because most likely, they have been laying around and that's more of a bacteria issue rather than listeria. enjoy the cold cuts!! i lived off of turkey and swiss sandwiches for the first like 3 months of my pregnancy.

Re: can we eat cold cuts?
My doctor says cold cuts once a week. I usually have salami or turkey once a week and then cheese the other days if I have a sandwich.

Same here. My dr. said cold cuts are fine, in moderation, brand name (like Boarshead), and from a reputable place.

Re: can we eat cold cuts?
you are fine, I eat them maybe once a week, I DO NOT reheat them and everything was fine with my 1st pregnancy
I recommend getting them from a reputable busy place so that they are not sitting on the shelf for too long
I stick with Boars Head

Re: can we eat cold cuts?
The FDA says not to eat them. It is risky because you won't ever know if the cold cuts you eat are contaminated. When you're pregnant your immune system isn't able to fight the bacteria/listeria like a normal person can. If you happen to eat contaminated cold cuts you will put your baby at risk. I was not willing to take this risk and thus didn't eat cold cuts while pregnant. You can take extra caution to only buy from a reputable place, but reputable places are often found to have issues and only once their caught by the health dept do we then realize it wasn't as clean as we thought.
