Can we talk sippy cups/bottles again?

At Emily's 1 year checkup the doctor gave me 3 things to work on...

Conversion from formula to whole milk (and down to 18 oz/day)

Get rid of the bottle -- sippy cups only...

Get rid of the Pacifier...

We are half-way there.

Paci is GONE completely for a month and a half now, nearly 2 months! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Whole milk is going fine, although she still drinks about 24 oz a day of it, we need to start cutting down...

But I can't get rid of the bottles.

Okay, Okay, I haven't really tried.

But she doens't drink MUCH at all from her sippy cups. I'll make one juice/water cup that'll last her ALL day through 3 meals and letting her have it in the living room. SHe'll maybe have 1/2 of it gone by the end of the night and I dump the rest.

I'm afraid that if I put milk in the sippies she'll never finish them and won't get enough.

I know, I need to stop obsessing...

We've tried tons of different sippy cups. Gerber with handles, plain gerber, nuby, take & toss, tupperware.....she likes the take & toss & tupperware ones the best it seems....the nuby and gerber with handles the least...

Is there something out there that I am missing? I'd love for her to be off of the bottle. I'm sick of cleaning them, sick of buying the liners, and don't want it to be a hard habit to break later on.

I am having a hard time with the transition too. When I put the milk in a sippy, he doesn't drink as much of it, puts it down and walks away from it. He drinks water with no problem from the sippy but for some reason, milk in there doesn't have the same appeal.

So I got him off formula into whole milk but I have been putting in the bottle (bad me) instead of the sippy. I do keep trying every day though.

Have you tried the Nuby sippy cup to transition to regular sippys? them have a sift spout. DS took to them right away and then I started throwing in the regular sippys

The nuby was one of the first ones we tried since everyone recommended it. I wouldn't say that it's a very soft spout though. Maybe there is another nuby that I am using? I try it again from time to time but she really has a hard time getting stuff out of it.

Re: Can we talk sippy cups/bottles again?

First of all YAY on her achievements!!

I worried about this too until recently I saw someone post they weren't going to force the issue b/c they are not worried their DC will walk down the aisle with bottle in handChat Icon ........I agree.

Logan LOVES his bottle of milk, I mean LOVES it!!!! He drinks 3 bottles a day of milk and has a sippy of water all day long whenever he wants it. I've tried numerous times to put milk in the sippy and he tastes it and throws it. I then put it in the bottle and he sucks it right down. Yesterday DH and I did an experiment. We put milk in the sippy and water in the bottle....well he was ******!!!! He was looking at us like -um mama something is wrong here- it was pretty funny!

The thing with us is if we take the bottle away and put the milk in the sippy, he just won't EVER drink millk........so we are keeping the bottle!!Chat Icon

You read my mind! I'm having the same dilemma. I think I just have to be more aggressive with it (i.e., throw the bottles out so I can't use them). I know the longer we wait, the harder it's going to be. I promised myself that I would have her off the bottles by the holidays!
Good luck...I know it's not easy. Chat Icon

Do you heat the milk? When my DS was 1 I was still heating his morning milk and putting it in a sippy cup. I tried all the cups too and now we are happy with the playtex insulator cups.

milk in bottle and water in cup...I'm not stressing the issue I really do not see the need to.

It may sound like its rushing it a bit, but the sippy that worked for Andrew the best at first was one with a straw. He was BF and never had a bottle, so I am not sure if this is why he was able to use a straw cup first, but once he got the hang of it, we were able to use any kind of sippy cup after that.

We just stopped and gave her Nuby sippy cups. There are cheap ones at Walgreens for $1 that she loves and she also uses the straw ones. She probably only drinks about 12-16oz of milk a day but her ped. said that was fine and she pretty skinny too and he still didn't seem worried.
We're still stuck with the paci and have no plans of stopping it. I just can't deal with the tears that it will cause. Our ped told us 18 months for that so I'm hoping to make it by then. He said the same for the bottle but for some reason I just gave it a try and it went smoothe.

Re: Can we talk sippy cups/bottles again?

WTG EMily on getting rid of the paci- Im convinced Ry will going to college with his...

As far as the cup goes- I was told its way more important that he drinks the milk- so if the only way I can get him to drink it- was from a bottle- than to wait a lil longer...

She'll do it when shes ready!!!!

With this- Ill say I still havent even tried to take away either oneChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Can we talk sippy cups/bottles again?

Nate never took to the spout sippy cups. When we saw how much he liked to drinking out of a straw, we decided to try the Munchin straw cups. He didn't start using those until he was 12 months. He was off the bottle by the time he was 14 months, it took 2 weeks to wean him.

BTW, I think she'll do it when she's ready. My MIL is still up in arms bc we took the bottle away so early. She said we are making him grow up too early Chat Icon

My Mom who is a breastfeeding finatic said that she felt "sad" for Emily when we took the paci away and doesn't want us to take the bottle away yet either. I was shocked since she was so anti paci/bottle before Emily was born and never gave any to us....but since I had problems breastfeeding she came to terms with it and now she kinda believes that since she breastfed us over a year, that Emily should have the paci and bottle for over a year too. She says that babies need to $uck!

I guess I'm not freaking that we're not off of it yet, but I'm not going to hold onto it longer then necessary when she is ready.

I am going to start decreasing her bottles to 5 oz each for now to at least start cutting back a bit on the oz since we are over by 6 oz from what the Dr. recommends and I owuld like her to start eating more solids.

Re: Can we talk sippy cups/bottles again?

We are still using the bottle for milk. They will only use the sippy cup for water/juice.
I am in no rush to get them off of the bottle, to be perfectly honest - they still use is before bed.
With my oldest son, I remember he gave up the bottle on his own when he was 2. I thought it would be so hard cuz he hated the sippy cup, but he made the transition when he was good and ready.
I am going to follow their lead, to me they are still babies and I don't mind them having their bottles or pacifiers.

Definitely try a straw cup. Jesse took to them so easily - much more than a sippy cup.

Jacob will be one next month and i will not be taking the bottle away at that point. I have to say he isnt really "attached" to it though. He could go all day and never cry once for a bottle. But, even when i asked my ped about it he said "its totally up to you as to when you want to take it away, I do not go by any specific timetable." I have tried the sippy cup with him and he just plays with it, throws it on the floor etc. Oh and have i mentioned that he still doesnt even HOLD THE BOTTLE HIMSELF YET???? yeah, i have other issues to work on. I am glad to hear I am not the only one having issues with this. My dr. said not to worry until she is approaching 2 - but of course I still worry.

My ped said I can take the bottle away when I am ready. She gets her milk in a bottle for breakfast and her last bottle before she goes to bed. Other than that she drinks out of a sippy cup. She only likes the ones with a slim spout, if it is too thick she won't drink from it.

really, my nubys are pretty soft - just a little more definition than a bottle. I think the first time I sliced the hole to be a little bigger.

I tried to use the straw early (I hear it's better than sippy), but DS couldn't figure it out.
