Can we talk weaning from BF?

I'm about to start soon...I'd like to hear your experiences. When you started to wean, how old was DC? Did he/she have a particular 'dependence' on BFing, i.e. emotional? How was the transition to formula? How was their digestive reaction to it? How did you make it work for the both of you - any tips?

I'm so worried about how she'll deal without BF...especially now that she's teething. Chat Icon She literally does not want to leave my boob.Chat Icon Even if she dozes off and she's been eating plenty, she won't let me remove her. I feel like it's gonna be a tough road with this poor little tough cookie.

Re: Can we talk weaning from BF?

Ryan weaned at about 13 months so I have no experience with formula.

But we did it gradually. Since he was on a lot of finger foods/solids around 10 months he was down to only nursing 4 times a day.

We slowly dropped feedings and gratefully he was really good about it. The last week of BFing was in the morning only. Which surprised me, I thought that would have been the first session to go.

He has been completely weaned 3 months and doesn't seem to miss it too much. The first month I couldn't get dressed in front of him. If he saw me topless he'd whine and complain. And at night he will bury his head in my chest during his night time book. But that's it.

Tara- You know my story. I would try to wean her as soon as possible. Maybe try to introduce one formula bottle per day at first and see how she tolerates it. You know that we had to go through 3 different types of formula before we found one that works. It was rough. He was fine with drinking them formula it was the after effects of gas and digestion that were hard. Good luck!

Re: Can we talk weaning from BF?

Was just about to ask this question!

As my production has gone down and my stash is nearly gone, I sent Ann to day care yesterday with two bottles that were 1/2BM and 1/2 formula (along with bottles of just BM). Based on when we picked her up, she only had one of the mixed bottles but drank it no problem. Gave her the second mixed bottle as her last bottle.

She slept for about an hour then woke up screaming, crying, etc Chat Icon It was about two hours later that she finally settled, fell asleep on my chest in bed ... when she suddenly gagged, then spit up a TON all over me, the blanket, my pillows and the bed Chat Icon

So ... should I mix more BM to formula? Give her straight formula (maybe the combo set her off)? Try the RTF version (the other bottles were powder)? HELP!

Thanks everyone. We're taking Riley to the ped today, so I think we're going to start the weaning any day now (though I hate to make her more miserable with the possibility of digestive issues, on top of teething!). Just wondering how the attachment issue went for some of you...

I started mixing more BM and less formula. Like 5 oz BM and 1 of Formula. I used both the powder and the RTF. DS took the RTF better though.

Good luck!

Tara- I think it is good tht you are going to start soon. Liam is teething too and was when we weaned him too. It messed up his sleeping for about 2 weeks but he is back to his normal sleep schedule now. We didn't really have much of an attachment issue but I was only BFing 2x/day at that point. He was getting bottles of pumped BM for the other 2 feedings at the time. He still gets his before bed bottle from me most of the time which is the way it used to be when I was BFing.

I started weaning 2 weeks ago. We are down to 2 nursings a day. No problems so far with anything. He's content with whatver food comes his way in bottle or boob! lol
