Re: Can you just vote for the president?
No you can just vote for the presidents. Just don't pull down any other levers. You can vote for as few or as many things as you want....

Re: Can you just vote for the president?
you can vote for whomever you want. You don't have to vote in all the elections (ie judges, local, etc).

Re: Can you just vote for the president?
You can just chose "independant": that way you only have to select the Pres and VP... there are no other options

Can you explain what you mean?
In NY, you just pull the levers for the people you want to vote for. If you want to abstain from a particular race, you just don't pull those levers.

Re: Can you just vote for the president?
Do you know how we voted in FL? We got a form and had to connect arrows with a pen! They all looked like this === ===> and we had to connect the middle to the person we were voting for. Then we fed our form through a ballot machine.
I liked the levers when I voted in NY.

My MIL told us about this and she's worried that Florida is going to screw things up again. She said she and my FIL found it confusing and she could only imagine how the older residents were doing it.

You can just chose "independent": that way you only have to select the Pres and VP... there are no other options

I am in NY as well. There are columns: Republican, Democrat, independent. Independent gave an option to go ONLY with Pres and VP choices. There was only one lever to pull and empty space where all the other options were in Rep and Dem columns...

You don't have to vote down one whole column though. You can pick a Democratic president, a Republican congressperson, and pull nothing for state senator if you'd like. Didn't you also have the option for voting for the green party & Libertarian parties, etc for President?

it depends on the races in your area. There are races besides the President that have people running on the independent ticket.

Yes, but that just means that in you district, there were no independents running for the other offices. You never have to vote straight line for any party. If you vote straight ticket independent, then that means you only voted for Pres, but you voted for the Independent ticket for Pres. You can vote for ANY party for President and simply abstain from voting for any of the other races.
ETS - You just pull the levers for the people you want to vote for. Leave any races you don't want to vote for blank... It doesn't have anything to do with the party affiliation.
