can you look up taxes
online (true taxes) so you know the correct amount. i know on MLS they usually go lower than said.

I am not sure if you can look them up online but you can call the town and give them the address and get the true amount

If you live in Nassau County you can look them up on www.mynassauproperty.com. As far as I know, Suffolk County does not have a website like this.
On MLS, the Realtors are supposed to list the home as taxes without STAR. If they list it with STAR they are supposed to say so in the notes below.

Town of Smithtown too ...
You could also call the town with a specific address and request the information. It's all public.
