We are moving back into Manhattan. Right now we are using the City Mini but that is about 16 pounds. I'm looking for something lighter that I can put on my shoulder with a shoulder strap. The lighter the better. TIA.

Re: Can you recommend an umbrella stroller that is good for subways and buses?
I live in Manhattan also. I use the City Mini on the subway w/o a problem. But I need to get an umbrella stroller for the bus because it's not convenient to have to close up the city mini to get on the bus while holding DS and then sitting with it it doesn't get compact enough, people are always tripping over it because i can't get it in between the seats while its folded. So just for the bus I think I'm going to get the Maclaren Volo since it's the cheapes and I don't use the bus that much, I mostly take the subway.

Isn't it hard to carry DC, a diaper bag AND the city mini up and down the stairs?
I can hold DS with one hand for short periods of time but I wouldn't feel comfortable walking up or down stairs with him in one hand.
I thought if I could get a shoulder strap umbrella stroller, I could use a backpack diaper bag and I'd have 2 hands to carry him.

I don't carry him up and down the subway stairs, i keep him in the stroller and push the stroller down the stairs, step by step, with him in it. It's not hard at all once you get used to it. I have to walk down the outside stairs of my building and I do that every day multiple times a day so I'm used to it. Going up is harder, but I honestly would say about 8 times out of 10 someone helps me up the stairs, they grab one end of his stroller and we fly up the stairs. I don't bring the diaper bag with me when I'm walking around the city, it's too much. I bought one of those Skip Hop Pronto changers, it's just a changing pad with a pocket inside that holds a couple diapers, wipes and cream, and it attaches to the stroller handle. I put a couple of toys and burp cloth, maybe his puffs in the basket underneath and we're good to go.
But like I said, the bus is a pain in the asss, because you HAVE to take DS out of the stroller, you cannot wheel strollers onto buses. So with the city mini, it doesn't fold compact enough to fit in between the seats, so if I've got DS in one hand, the stroller in another and then shopping bags...well, I'm taking a cab. That's why I rarely take the bus when I'm with him.

I didn't realize you could go down stairs with the baby in it!
We are looking at apts right now and I've been passing on some beautiful larger apts in awesome neighborhoods because they are not in elevator buildings. If we could get in/out with a stroller in walk ups, I may have to rethink our whole housing situation.
