Can you share your gym workouts?

My friend from work and I just joined and we'd love some suggestions so that we don't do the same thing over and over. So what routines does everyone have?Chat Icon

Re: Can you share your gym workouts?

Hmmmmm....that is a tough one to answer, because I do so many different techniques and exercises (well, when I'm not PG anyway! Chat Icon )

To start off I would say do a split routine. This is when you do certain body parts on certain days. And you can mix this up however you'd like, but here's an example:

Day 1
Chest, biceps
30 - 45 minutes of cardio

Day 2
Back, triceps
30 -45 minutes of cardio

Day 3
Shoulders
30 - 45 min cardio

Day 4
Legs

Day 5
Rest or do just cardio

Day 6
Start over

I could list a TON of exercises for each bodypart, and a TON of training techniques, like number of reps, number of sets, pyramiding, drop sets, running the rack, etc etc, but an easier thing to do would be to go to the Muscle & Fitness website and look some things up. Or just buy the magazine and cut out the articles and put them in a binder for reference (that's what I've done for years).

Re: Can you share your gym workouts?

do you get a free training session? if you do you should take advantage over it- they will show you what to do using the machines your gym has

I would posy my routine but with out being able to show you- it's hard to communicate it

Yes, we get a free hour. DH showed me a ton of routines, too. I was thinking about focusing on a body part and doing cardio each day. IE: Arms and cardio on Mondays, back and cardio on Thursdays, legs and cardio another day and abs and cardio another day. Does that sound like a good plan?

Re: Can you share your gym workouts?

Yup, you can do back and chest one day, arms one day (biceps, triceps, shoulders), legs on the last day.
I wouldn't do abs only once a week. You can do them more often than that, because it's not necessary to spend more than 10 minutes on abs. And as long as you give them a day or 2 of rest, you can do them a few times a week. That's what I do anyway. I also will throw in some lower back extensions a couple of times a week with my ab workout.
Don't forget to stretch too! Chat Icon

Thanks Ann! Which machines do you feel are ones you get the most benefit from? Also, do you prefer elliptical over treadmill or something else?

Machines as in weight machines? I mostly use free weights, but for legs I'll use the leg extension machine, the hamstring curl machine, and the butt blaster to compliment squats using the squat rack. But for upper body, I use mostly free weights. About the only machine I'll use for upper body is the pull-up assist machine. Pull-ups are GREAT for the back - do them with your palms facing away from you to really work your back. When your palms are facing towards you (a chin-up) you're using your biceps to help you.

I usually use the elliptical, step mill, or stairmaster when I do cardio. Occasionally I'll use the treadmill and walk fast with it on an incline.

Re: Can you share your gym workouts?

When I go to the gym I do a half hour on the eliptical machine and then another 20-30 mins on the step machine.

I then do full body everytime I go to the gym.
Arms, back, butt, legs and stomach. I've been doing that for a long time and it's always worked for me. I'm usually at the gym for two hours.
