Can you take a decongestant when you are BF?

I have DS' cold and now it feels like my sinuses are going to explode. Is there anything I can take? I most likely won't be BF again until 7pm tonight but if DS doesn't eat well (because he's sick) there's a possibility I would BF again.

Most things that you can take will affect your supply.

You can, but it's bad for your supply. It dries up everything, including your sinuses and milk.

Don't take any combo stuff lie NyQuil, just a half dose of phenyephrine, which is will effect your supply less than pseudoephedrine.

I've taken it in occasion, but I usually just tried to tough it out with hot tea and a netipot

I assume it will affect my supply permanently?

Only if you take it for an extended period of time. For a day or two, it could possibly decrease supply significantly, and is not recommended at all if you have supply issues already. If you do take a decongestant, take it right after you nurse, and take measures to increase your supply (fenugreek, tea, etc)

Feel better!

Re: Can you take a decongestant when you are BF?

I had sinus congestion and a sinus infection and I was prescribed a nasal spray (flonase I think). I was concerned about my supply so I hadn't taken anything prior to seeing a doctor. Had no issues with the nasal spray and my supply. DS was only about 7 weeks at that point.
