Can you tell a lot about someone..
from his/her posts?
And which ones? I mean we have so many posts about what's for lunch, favorite yankee candle scent, etc. I was wondering, what does your favorite yankee scent say about you? Do you think these little small talk posts give any real insight? Do you think that you can "know" someoen through his orher posts, serious and lighthearted?

wow that is many questions
1. no i don't think you can tell everything there is to know about someone from their posts...I think it shows some of their personalities but DEFINTELY not all!!!! That you can do in FMs....
2. I don't think this iste and ALL it's posts should be about being "insightful". Some of them are, some of thema re mindless chit chat, some are for venting...etc etc...
But i think you learn most about a person through FMs Not Posts!
ETA...there are PLENTY of people that are completely different in person and in their "real lives" as opposed to how they post!!!

Re: Can you tell a lot about someone..
Well I mean do all of these small talk posts accumulate in your head and add up to a picture of a person. Or do you just have the post and ignore it? Do you think "wow, that's cool. we like the same yankee candles!" hee hee

the small talk posts don't add up to anything for me...
But yes in my mind i get a picture of what people are like by some other posts..... BUT i do not think that is a definite until i have gotten to know the person.

Yeah, b/c I ignore the smalltalk posts. I read them and I participate, but I don't retain anything from them at all. But I wonder if some people do..like if you know people's favorite color or birthday or something

i think that taking ones shoes off when entering a home or Tasti Dee lite actually is small talk!
Most of these threads aren't exactly deep conversations....
And i am glad they aren't.!!!!

Re: Can you tell a lot about someone..
I dont think you can tell alot about someone from small talk but I think you can get a hint at a few underlying personality traits.

I remember really odd bits, like Lolita likes Charlize Theron and has tatoos, or so and so likes to travel, or poster B read a book i enjoyed.
Sometimes they acumulate into a vague impression, especially if the poster is very active on the boards, but nothing is set in stone.

I wasn't saying small talk was bad at all!!!
In fact this entire thread is small talk. Cause I was thinking about the yankee scents and I was wondering, hmm..what Does your favorite yankee scent say about you? it makes you wonder. Do people who like storm watch love thunderstorms? Are the food scent people big eaters? Do seaside holiday people have memories of beach vacations?
ETA: When i said I ignore them I mean that I don't retain like who said what, or whatever. I don't make a mental note that like such and such poster hates sushi or whatever. I enjoy the conversation but I don't think about it too much

Re: Can you tell a lot about someone..
I know I don't let the true me come out in my posts 95% of the time. And then it also takes me awhile to warm up to people when I first meet them. I have to be comfortable in my surroundings before I let my guard down.
I may post things I like/dislike, but I wouldn't think others would be able to figure me out from it

Some people are really observant and think they can. Sometimes when i talk to someone I'm surprised how much they remember about me or someone else from the boards. Or how tiny a thing some people think they can judge someone over. but I guess that kind of attitude would carry over itno real life as well

You can learn a lot about a person from their posts but you'll never know them completely.

Re: Can you tell a lot about someone..
I don't think you really know a person by their posts. Some people participate in threads that are just small talk (whats for dinner, what's your favorite candle set) and some people post more on drama threads or political threads or the home board, or the baby board.
