Can you tell me about Huntington?
So DH and I are hopefully looking to make a move next year. I am confused as can be on where to settle but I am trying to gather info. I always liked Huntington; especially its beautiful main Street. I have heard mixed things about the school district(s). Can anybody break that down a little for me? Cause according to mlsli.com I see about 4 districts. Anything else I should know? This is a city girl here so I could use all the info I can get!

Re: Can you tell me about Huntington?
Sure, I grew up in the South Huntington district, went to Whitman. My address was technically Huntington Station. I'd stay away from anything that is close to the LIRR station over there...thats the nasty part of town. My district got a little bad after I graduated but from what i understand its better again...
Theres great shopping, proximity to all the highways as long as you don't go too car north...everything you could want! I'm not sure what else to tell you so give me some hints, haha.
ETA: Theres Huntington which is SD#3 South Huntington which is SD#13 Harborfields which is probably the best of them, I forget which number it is... Not sure if you consider Half Hollow part of Huntington, its more Melville/Dix Hills but this is a FANTASTIC district, part of best of LI...the people we bought from moved to that district!

Re: Can you tell me about Huntington?
I live in Huntington but we are in the Elwood school district. My first question would be your budget and how close you want to be to the village? I grew up in Centerport and was about 10 minutes from the village. Do you want to live in Huntington or a town in Huntington like Greenlawn, Centerport, etc.?

Re: Can you tell me about Huntington?
i'd say it's best to aim for something in harborfields (greenlawn, i think centerport, and surrounding area) or half hollow hills (melville, dix hills)
* huntington high school is infested with madagascar cockroaches. i taught summer school there. it was scary.
* huntington & south huntington both include huge enclaves of new immigrants and poverty, and the honest truth is that a lot of energy (and tax $$$) is devoted to getting those populations up to par with the threat of testing and being on the "bad list."
ETA: northport is pretty close to huntington, has a village area of its own (tho much smaller, still adorable) and has a great SD.

If you want to be near the village, but in a good school district, you should look at Cold Spring Harbor and Harborfields. Both border Huntington Village and have top schools.
