Sometimes I can, it depends on what I am doing.
but DH makes fun of me b/c I can NEVER seem to do it in a restaurant. I hear everyone's drama and tell him and he always says, "how do you hear all that stuff??"

Yes completely.
I was reading on the train yesterday and the woman next to me asked how i can read with all the loud voices of the chaminade kids on our train. I thought to myself "At least they didn't interrupt me while I'm reading"
