Canada anyone?
I just spoke with one of my Canadian clients who just got back from her maternity leave. Her EIGHTEEN MONTH maternity leave. All workers get 12 mos, she got an extra six based on her place of employment (gov't agency).
How is that fair?? When I told her Americans get 12 weeks she was aghast. I was awestruck when she told me about hers but now I'm like hey, why should I be - that's what it SHOULD be!
Anyway, just venting. You know if men had babies they'd have 100% paid leave until the damn kid was in like second grade

Tell me about it! I am so grateful to be getting 12 weeks and I don't know if all of it is paid. NYS only covers 6 weeks disability paid, and under FMLA- the 12 weeks don't have to be paid.

I know it! (I learn a lot from being a lurker on the pregnancy board ). It makes me sick to think about this. I just told DH we're moving to Canada until our youngest kid is three and then we can come back here.

yup my cousin in Canada who had her baby last year told me the same thing! I couldnt believe it.
I think tuition in Canada is also VERY cheap or even practially free compared to the US, another perk for pple living there!

In Italy it's something ridiculous like 18 months too! My Italian vendors are gone for years...and get to keep their jobs.

And you also receive money monthly for the children you have (in Italy). They pay you to be a stay at home mom.

Re: Canada anyone?
My office doesn't even get the 12 unpaid weeks, b/c we are to small for FMLA to apply. It varies case by case, but one of the managers had a baby last year & was off for only 3 weeks & then started working from home.
Although, after 18 months, I'm not sure I could just pick up where I left off. . .

Re: Canada anyone?
You may get free medical in Canada and the maternity leave is ok... but trust me it isn't all its cracked up to be.
The QUALITY of medical care you get in Canada PALES in comparison to the US. I know so many canadians that complain about their "free health coverage".

Its cheaper... well... its free. But the quality isn't as good. Plus you have a more difficult time getting appointments... making claims... etc. They only treat the "necessities".
If you have real insurance in the US... you can normally get a lot more medical treatment.
