Canceled Holiday Parties
Our firm nixed all of them. Wow, now you know the economy is in the sh!tter.
Our IT dept has a giant one at Chelsea Piers every year. The trickle down effect of this is huge. With one month to go, all of the venues booked for the parties will lose the revenue even though the deposits where taken.
Sign of the times.

Re: Canceled Holiday Parties
We have a very small office and contribute to the "sunshine fund" every payday. The money collected pays for our staff party. We invite former employees, but those invites mention the cost p/p. The total group is only 20 people.

Re: Canceled Holiday Parties
yup - ours are cancelled this year and I am very happy they made that decision! I work for a company with offices around the world and God only knows how many millions those parties cost! if it helps save jobs, I am ALL FOR IT!

Ours is still going on but it will be very toned down. DH's is still going on but his company does it right after New Year's so we'll see what happens.

Re: Canceled Holiday Parties
Ours was cancelled, but a large portion of what would have been spent was instead donated to 2 charities. One helps the families of people who's head od household ha been deployed as a military reserve, and the other is to a local LI charity that helps families in need (in various ways...food schopping, clothes for children, homework help & support services, etc). I think rather than just nix everything, the company wanted to give a donation to help others.
DHs party was knoked down from a huge off-site catered event to a small thing at the shop.

Re: Canceled Holiday Parties
The money that would be spent is being given to charity (so they say). All parties in my firm are canceled. There are so many dpeartments in so many countries..it has to be in the 10s of millions. I hope it does go to charity for real.
Unfortunately, I don't think it will save many jobs. I think on the heels of firms like AIG, they couldn't go forward with the plans. It looks too boondoggle like.
Think of the trickle down effect of not having these parties. All that revenue not going to the venues, the staff, the entertainment. This could really hurt widespread.

Re: Canceled Holiday Parties
I am pretty positive ours will be cancelled. It's always at the Ritz-Carlton and the company goes all out for it.
Right now they are in the middle of moving to a smaller location, selling furniture and they just laid off our entire warehouse department and opening a much smaller one in Texas.
With all of that I dont see them having a holiday party

Re: Canceled Holiday Parties
I haven't seen anything about our departments Holiday Party this year. But with that said, I'm inclined to think there won't be one since we usually know by now.
We also went through a huge company lay off two weeks ago, with more coming after the new year.
