Cape owners: ridge vent/attic fan

We have a ridge vent and it is still insanely hot upstairs. People have mentioned putting in an attic fan, dh recently gutted one room and can add it but he read that basically you have one or the other

Anyone have both? Did it make a difference?

It makes a difference but you will still need lots of AC!

We have an attic fan for the main living space and its better than nothing, and can bring in a nice breeze. We have window ACs in the bedroom.

You don't run both at the same time. If both were to be on, the cool air made by the AC will be sucked into the attic.

Run Attic Fan when its cooler outside then inside. Run AC when its hotter outside then inside.

When doing attic fan, you need to make a path from outside to inside. Opening certain windows will create a breeze from the window/door to the ceiling fan. Don't open everything as you won't feel a good breeze coming in. You may want to but the fan in central location such as the main hallway so other rooms can benefit.

We don't have a ridge vent as we just have 3 vents out from the attic.

We have both. Right now no one uses the upstairs bedrooms, so we dont put the AC on and just leave the fan running. If guests come over, we turn the fan off and run the AC.

Re: Cape owners: ridge vent/attic fan

What do you consider an attic fan? From most descriptions on here, I think people are describing what I call a "whole house fan". To me, an attic fan is on the roof, just to vent the attic. A whole house fan is in the top floor ceiling, and pulls air from the house into the attic.

Many houses have ridge vents and attic fans running on a thermostat. I agree with everyone else about the AC and the whole house fan, though.
