Car Accident- Dont use car seat again?

Hi,

DH, DD and I were in a car accident two weeks ago. None of us were injured but the other car hit us on the passenger side with enough impact to cause about $4500 damage and the air bags deployed.

DD was in the back directly behind the passenger seat. She is okay but I thought I had read somewhere that you shouldnt use the car seat if it was involved in an accident...

I am assuming this is if you can see any physical damage but just wanted to get your advice.

Thanks a lot.

I think I read in the instruction manual that you are not supposed to use it after it's been in a car accident because there could unseen damage that could compromise its safety features.

But I don't know if people typically heed that warning.

I had my car seat inspected and I was told by the inspectors to NEVER use a car seat that has been in an accident.

Sometimes unforseen damage has occurred and you wouldn't know it unless you were in another accident.

I'm really glad that you were all ok.

you should not use the car seat again. In fact, your car seat can be claimed through insurance who should reimburse you for the cost of the replacement.

Glad you are all ok!! Good luck!

I just read the other day in i think Babytalk magazine (i threw it out or i would check) that the recommendations have changed and in *some* cases you can still use the carseat. i don't remember the exact requirements though. i think it said if there was damage to the door next to the car seat that you couldn't use it. there were a few other things too.

I work for a car insurance company and they will reimburse you for the carseat if its been in an accident. They will ask you to bring it in so they can retain and dispose of it and will give you the money back for it.

I just read this too. The article says

"It must meet ALL the following criteria to be used after an accident:
*You were able to drive your car away from the scene of the crash.
*The vehicle door closest to the child safety seat was not damaged.
*There were no injuries to any of the occupants of your vehicle.
*the vehicle's air bags did not deploy.
*There is no visible damage to the car safety seat itself.
If you're still unsure, take your car seat to an authorized inspection station for free advice. Talk to your insurance agent, some policies will cover the cost of a replacement seat."

Re: Car Accident- Dont use car seat again?

Thank you all so much for the replies....I have left a message for my insurance agent about this - of course they didnt volunteer this information to me and they knew my DD was in the car in her car seat.

Based on the fact that the airbags did deploy, the car was not driveable and the damage was done to the door next to hers I think we should get rid of it...it is time to change hers anyway but I would have used this for my next child.

Thanks everyone Chat Icon Chat Icon

You can take it the police department and they should be able to check it for you. I know around here (michigan)they will exchange it at the police department for you, if you are low income. If not the police department then I would definitely call the maker of it

I read this article also. Id get rid of it considering your air bags deployed and you couldnt drive it away. better safe than sorry....

The insurance will definitely pay for it. You are not supposed to use it again. As far as I'm concerned, better safe than sorry.
