Car accident/insurance Q
Driving home from our trip yesterday, a tire wrap blew off a tractor trailor and realllllllly messed up the front of Rich's car. He'll definitely need a new front bumper, maybe even more. I didn't get the plate # of the truck, and of course, it didn't stop.
It was soooo scary because the tire came out of nowhere...there was nowhere to swerve out of the way, no possible way to avoid the dumb thing. We're just grateful it didn't bounce up and hit the windshield...or I'd have a very smashed face right now.
Soooo....does this go under his comprehensive coverage? Should it increase his rates? The damage is most likely well over $1000, and he thinks his deductible is $500.
It was truly an ACCIDENT...there's nothing we could've done.
Does anyone's SO do body work? Anyone have any insurance info? TIA

i was always told that any kind of damage that is claimed that is over 1000...expect a rate increase.

Re: Car accident/insurance Q
Okay, wow...something kinda sorta similar happened to me a few months back....an MTA Express Bus' tire guard came off, hit one of those thin plastic orange lane dividers, and smaked into my windshield and shattered the windshield and dented a good part of my hood and roof.
I did have the license, bus number and such, but never heard anything from the MTA and went through my insurance alone.
The damages were approximately $3,200 and insurance (Statefarm) covered it all and my rates did not go up.
However...I have full coverage of my car, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Re: Car accident/insurance Q
My DH says it depends on the company (he works in insurance).

I definitely think it depends on the company. for something like what happened to you, it could be covered under no fault and your rates won't go up.
good luck!

I have Allstate and my DH recently hit one of those construction barrels that rolled into the road and cracked the front bumper. We put a claim in....our rates aren't going up ( think the estimate was close to $1000)

Re: Car accident/insurance Q
keep in mind...your rates my not increase to the next renewal time....
you really never know what they can do.
It could also depending on other driving situation you were in.
Did this happen in NYS...? NYS is a non-fault state (what ever that means - both ins. would of been contacted to aggree on somethingi but you don't have his info) not much you can do but file a claim unless you know somebody that can order the part for alot less to do it....

No-Fault only applies to injuries, not damage. It means if you're injured in an accident, you go under the policy of the vehicle you are in to get your medical bills paid - doesn't matter whose vehicle is at fault.
As for this situation, it sounds like a comprehensive claim being something hit your vehicle, and you didn't hit something (which would be a single car collision, most likely a rate increase). As long as they don't attribute liability to you (for following too closely or whatever) and you don't have a lot of prior claims, your rates probably won't go up (of course, you never know). Also, Allstate has been making a lot of changes lately in NY so they might have different rules.

Re: Car accident/insurance Q
We definitely weren't following too closely - we were the 2nd car behind the tire. The first car was my parents in a high SUV - the tire just slid right under them.
This happened in South Jersey and he has 1 accident on his record (from 3 years ago).
