Car accident police report
How long do you have to report an accident? It was two cars backing out of opposite parking spots that bumped.

Re: Car accident police report
You have 24 hours to report it, the longer you wait the more time the story has to spin out of control.
eta: what started as a bump will turn into a totalled car...etc

Re: Car accident police report
I had an accident last month right outside of a parking lot, and the cop said had it been in the parking lot each person is held 50/50 accountable, regardless of whether one person was parked, etc.

I love how they sometimes decide that they're Insurance Liability Adjusters all of a sudden!
I had a Police Officer, no offense to them- I come from a family of all Cops, tell me once that I would be partially at fault for an accident (I was rear ended while I was stopped at a stop sign). Let's just say the other person was 100% at fault, no ?s asked.
That same Officer then told me "No worries, no fault will handle it"... Umm no fault deals with parties that are injured- it has nothing to do with the accident itself, damage to vehicles, etc. Amazing! Now, of course all Police Officers are not like this and I'm not trying to rag on them at all b/c I'm a huge Police supporter but apparently some seem to think they know it all but when it comes to liability in accidents- I wonder why they even bother commenting on it at all... lol, OK rant over!
For the original question... As per your Family Auto Policy (FAP) your Insurance Company prefers any and all losses (meaning, vehicle accidents, any damage happening to a vehicle) reported within the first 24-48 hours of the loss occuring.
It is best if you report it so that you have the "first word" in what happened and your Insurance Company can get the ball rolling on what to do- fixing the car, determining liability, etc.
Now, in some cases it is determined a 50/50 with parking lot losses involving vehicles that "bump" while backing out but that all depends on the Points of Impact on both cars, both people's stories and if there were any witnesses.
HTH, if you need any other help feel free to FM me... I used to decide liability in car accidents for a living. I have since left the Insurance Company I was working for b/c I couldn't stand it anymore haha! Not a very enjoyable job- let me tell you!
