Car advice.. at what point do you give up on a car and get a new one?
My car is now 7 years old... a crappy Dodge. It seems things are breaking all the time with it. Now I can't get my inspection done because the check engine light is on. I have had this "fixed" in the past but it always comes back on. I have been to 3 different mechanics also. The one I took it to thinks I need to replace a few things that will come up to about $400 just for the check engine thing...BEFORE the inspection. Part of me just wants to get rid of the car... since the Kelly blue book value for FAIR condition is over $4K... I figure at least I can get some decent money for it now. Since the EXCELLENT condition is only worth 1K more, I don't think I should even bother trying to fix it and then sell it for more. I would just sell it as is. But part of me wants to keep it, since my commute to work is only 4 miles each way. Maybe I should fix it and try to keep this car until it dies. But maybe if I keep it another year then try to sell it, it will be worth nothing. If I was going to get a new car, I don't have a clue what I would want! Probably something great on gas and dependable. I am so torn. Right now the pros and cons of each are about equal. Any ideas?

Hmmm, it is not costing me more than a loan payment yet, but I am worried it might start

Not to hijack but I am in the same exact situation. I have a crappy Mitsubishi...5 years old, still paying it and it's awful. Please let me know how you go about out...I haven't done any research so I don't know if you turn in the car, add it to another loan/finance, need a down payment, etc.
Good luck with your car!

You want to get rid of it before it dies and then it's not worth anything....

Well, mine is paid off already... so thats why I'm thinking if it can last for a while, even if it is a little crappy I only have a 4 mile drive, and I am paying no payments, why not keep it. I was just looking online at cars and I have no clue what to get! I mean what make, model, even what year OR color!!!

Mine was supposed to be paid off...but because we paid for the wedding we stopped sending extra payments. We bought it in 03.
And I have no idea idea, hence why I was trying to piggyback on your research! It's overwhelming!

i was so fed up with my car that i promised myself the next time it needed to be fixed that i would get a new car, well guess what that actually happened, and i got a new car last year, the payments are really that bad either. if you like foreign cars i would say either a hyundai or honda, hyundai have the great warranty behind them so you won't have to worry in the future about anything. my aunt and uncle actually traded in their toyota for a hyundai.

Julz, One thing you can try is ask the mechanic to just check the sensors for the check engine light. I have had problems in the past with the light coming on and found out AFTER the mechanic went through all the various systems that just the sensors kept going out. They might be able to just replace those and it could solve the problem if they can't find anything else wrong.

How much would you be looking to spend? Do you want a brand new car or are you willing to buy pre owned?

If you go new, go Honda - I had a Civic for 6 years, gave it to my sister and now have had an Accord for 4 years. The old Civic is still going strong - and you get good mileage out of them.
Being that your commute is only 4 miles, do you need a new car? How about a used car just to get you to and from work?

Get a toyota corolla, or its sister the chevrolet prizm. I bought a 2001 back in 2003 and it is the best car I have ever owned. I have a greay 2001 Chevy Prizm Lsi. I pay $135 a month for it.....The whole car is made by toyota including the engine, transmission etc....but it is sold by chevrolet....It is inexpensive on insurance, gas and it is very relieable...

Re: Car advice.. at what point do you give up on a car and get a new one?
Have you husband disconnect the battery cable for a good hour (cutting off power to the entire car).
This should reset the car's computer. This may also "temporarily" eliminate the check engine light.
If it eliminates the check engine light... immediately take it over to the service station for an inspection and you will probably pass it.
Let me know if this helps.

Good idea! We will try this.
If I do get a "new" car it doesn't have to be brand new, it can be a newer used one.

Hi Julie!
I know nothing about cars, but I bought a toyota corolla and am very happy with it. Check out edmunds.com, cars.com for different reviews. Good luck!
