Car donation?

We have an old car (white 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII aka "white shark"). Given it's age, and the fact that it needs a little work done, we don't think we'll be able to sell it (nor is it worth the effort). So, we'd like to donate it. Can anyone recommend a place for donation? What was the write-off? Thanks!

My parent's have done this with cars. I believe that they donated it to a foundation for the blind (kind of ironic, right?) Chat Icon . It was a great tax write-off for them. HTH

Fire Depts - they use them to teach firefighters how to extricate people from cars.

Re: Car donation?

We've donated a number of cars to different organizations. The tax write-off has changed. You just can't estimate the car's worth anymore. You now have to wait for the organization to send you a verification for how much they actually sold the car for in order to claim it on your taxes. So, while the blue-book value of your car may be a certain amount, it's what was actually paid for it that will count. People have been found to claim outrageous amounts for their cars so the government stepped in and made it more difficult for the honest person to catch a break. What a pain in the azz!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Car donation?

I donated a car a few year back to the heritage for the blind. It was pretty easy, they picked it up and gave me the value (more than it was worth) and used it for a tax write-off.

Re: Car donation?

I donated mine last fall to Habitat for Humanity. They had someone come and pick it up - it was very easy.
