Car rental -with pick-up & drop off in different locations?

Anyone know of a way to rent a car in one city, drive to another city where the car will be returned, without a HUGE surcharge? (Every company I've looked at has a fee of about $900 on top of the regular rental fee). DH and his son are trying to plan a road trip out west, starting in Seattle and ending in Texas, but the cost of the rental car is crazy! any ideas?

i know- its crazy, right?? the only thing I can think of is try pricing it opposite way. sometimes the rental company needs more invertory of cars in the other city, so they have a smaller surcharge for dropping it off in that city.
DH and i did a road trip down the CA coast a couple years ago. we went from San Fran to SAn Diego. i can't remember which, but one direction was cheaper than other. (We didn't really have a choice because we had a wedding to go to in San Diego and couldn't do the vacation part afterward because of my job). but i definitely remember one direction was a lot cheaper than going the other direction.... so check into that, if they can change...

Thanks for the idea. I tried it the opposite way - still the same price . I think they are going to wind up re-thinking their trip and just drive from here.

we just used Budget in Orlando, We picked up at the airport and then droped off at a cruise port.

I found some online codes and it was pretty inexpensive! Most were a ton of money to pick up and drop off at different places
