Car Seat Question - Pre Schooler
Hi -- I am so confused...
DD is currently 41lbs and 40 inches. In my car she's in a Britax Marathon affixed with the LATCHES. I think she's getting too big for the LATCH and that I need to switch to having the seat installed with the seatbelt... The manual was so confusing so I'm not 100% sure..
But at what point do I move her to a booster seat with a 5 pt harness? I think I have to wait unitl she's 5 to use the seatbelt instead of the harness? But do I move her into a new seat now?
I'm confused and overwhelmed with the Car Seat for Little page on FB...
Thank you!!

Re: Car Seat Question - Pre Schooler
There isn't a specific age to move them to a high back booster with seatbelt. They have to be able to sit up properly and there are a bunch of other things that you use to judge if they can be in a high back without a harness. I will try to find the list. Also, if they have outgrown the harness seat, they should be moved regardless.

... In a rule that became effective in February 2014, NHTSA advises parents not to use the lower anchors of LATCH if the combined weight of the child and the car seat is 65 pounds or more, according to NHTSA. The agency does allow car seat makers to round up child weight maximums to whole numbers, such as 40 pounds instead of 38, so the total combined weight maximum may be closer to 70 pounds for a few car seats. ...
It sounds like DC and seat combined are getting close to the maximum LATCH weight limit, if not above it already.

Car Seat Question - Pre Schooler
For boosters they say AT LEAST 4, 40 lbs, 40 inches... But, my kids weren't booster-ready at 4.
I moved DS 1 at almost 7 to a high back booster (and now at almost 8 he's in a backless) and DS 2 at 5.5 to a high back booster (he's bigger than DS 1 was at the age and was ready to convert).

Re: Car Seat Question - Pre Schooler
Thanks that's what I was thinking.... the britax site was saying my seat - the 70-G3 has a maximum weight of 70lbs.
So I guess this means I need a new seat??

What did you use for your kids at 4 then if they weren't ready. I'm not ready to take her out of the 5 point harness just yet...

No, when the combined weight is at or near 65lbs, you have to switch them to the seatbelt method of attaching the car seat to the vehicle. The seat itself is fine until the weight indicated, just the attachment method has to change.
You can use the seatbelt to attach the car seat at any time, but you have to after the 65lb weight limit of the LATCH points.

I had them in a regular seat - we have Graco Argos (like the Nautilus) that turn into a high back booster and then a backless booster.
But, you can keep them harnessed until they hit the overall height or weight requirement (they may be too tall before they would hit 70 lbs). But, you can't use the latch after they reach a certain weight.
