Car Seat Question...

I currently have the Peg Perego infant car seat and although it is nice, it is sooooo heavy! I figure with DS in it, the bundle me, etc., it must weigh over 30 pounds by now. I have a very difficult time lugging it around, and that's just from my house to the car! DS just turned 3 months this week, and I have a feeling he weighs close to 14 pounds by now. I'll find out for sure next week at his pediatrician appointment.

I was thinking about purchasing the Graco snugride infant carrier and ebaying the Peg Perego. But the reviews I read online say that babies outgrow the snugride pretty quickly, and before you know it, they are in a convertible carseat.

So I'm not sure what to do. Do you think it is worth it at this point to purchase a new infant carrier, or just deal with it for another few months until he is close to outgrowing it?

I have a silly question too. Do I just carry DS around (like from the house to the car for example) once he does outgrow the infant carrier? I'm just so used to using the carrier I'm not sure what the next "stage" is. Did you guys purchase a convertible car seat? When can I start using a lighter stroller that reclines, like the Maclaren one?

Re: Car Seat Question...

We have the Graco right now and it's been great, but Luca is really too big for it now- he's almost 5.5 months. We will be switching to the converatble seat soon.

Re: Car Seat Question...

I am not familiar with the seat you have, but I have the snugride and DD is almost 7 months and she is almost 15lbs, it is tough to lug around but she fits in it fine and still has room to grow in it. I don't carry her too far in it, normally just from house to car.

I don't think at this point it pays for you to get a new one. I would just deal with it. Do you use a snap and go - this way you're not doing as much carrying the seat. But yes, I know it even gets heavy carrying DC from the car to the house.

We have the Graco Snug Ride and DD is almost 6 months -s she's probably about 17 pounds though so it's still really heavy. The one I has go up to 22 pounds and 29 inches - so we are going to change into the regular carseat soon. And yes, from what I see, you just take the baby out and carry then after that. I know- the infant carrier is so much easier- esp in the cold weather.

Re: Car Seat Question...

I have a snugride, alone it weighs 8lbs. I think all infant carrier get heavy when the little one strapped inside of it starts to put on weight.

If it's getting too heavy for you, i would just go with the convertible and not spend more money on an infant seat.

I stopped using mine when DD was 8 months old and about 16 lbs and we put her into a convertible. Even at almost a year she still fits into it, but it's wayyy too heavy, although i miss the convenience of it.

Re: Car Seat Question...

I had the snugride and my DS was out at around 6-7 months. It was heavy too. If I were you I would just stick it out. After DS went into the convertible seat I just carried him in and out of the house. I put him in a stroller when I'm going anywhere or in the shopping cart with the shopping cart cover thing. I started putting him in the stroller w/o the infant seat around 4 months for short periods of time. I would still leave him in the infant carrier alot of the time b/c he would stay asleep in there!

I also had a Peg Perego infant car seat and both my kids used it until they were 4 and 5 months old. They were big babies, and it got too heavy to carry, so we went to the Marathon car seat. And I just use the stroller when we are out.

In your case, I would not buy another infant car seat, get your convertable car seat and go from there.

Re: Car Seat Question...

I have the peg perego and both my kids were out of it by 4 months since it became so inconvenient as they grew. So they both went into Evenflo Triumph convertible seats at that age. Its inconvenient when you go to a restaurant or something because they are too young to sit in a highchair, so as someone on this board suggested I keep the carrier in the car for trips to the grocery store or out to eat.

Re: Car Seat Question...

I have the Snug Ride and it isn't light. Emma doesn't even weigh 6lbs and I can barely carry the thing now.

I had the Snugride and my son was out of it at 4 months. I switched him to the Britax Marathon.
