Car Seats and accidents!! PLEASE READ!!!

Hi Everyone,
I was telling my DH about how many accidents there were yesterday because of the snow. This is really important!!!

He is an insurance adjuster and wanted me to tell everyone, since a lot of insurance companies won't tell you because they have to pay.

IF you are in an accident, even a minor one, you MUST remove your car seat and buy a new one. The insurance company WILL pay for this. All you have to do is buy a new one and they will reimburse you.

This is a safety violation if you don't. For some reason the car seat is impacted from the accident and is no longer safe.

Hope this helps!!!

Great info, especially with all of the recent accidents. It's mentioned on this site every once in a while, but it's always good to keep reminding people about it.

It doesnt work for all accidents thoughChat Icon remember while back I posted how some old man hit me- pulling out of a business driveway onto traffic- smashed my front bumper- well b/c the impact was there I was not eligible to receive a new car seat. I tried though would have been nice to get another roundabout for freeChat Icon

does your DH know what safety code number it is? or is there an insurance code for that so I have ammo and call my insurance company back? and do you know is there a limit of how much they will reimburse for a car seat?

maybe they didnt do it b/c it wasnt a hard impact- it was a slow hit meaning I had stopped short he kept pulling out hitting my front bumper at a rate of 5 miles an hour but stepping on his gas hard fighting resistance ( my car) and thats how I got so much damage. It wasnt an impact at a high rate of speed. thats what Im guessing was there figuring. it was like someone trying to fit into a parking space hitting the car infront of you damaging your bumper- the car is rocking but thats it.

I always knew that. Thanks for the reminder, especially after yesterday!

My car was hit, while parked in my driveway. No one was in it (car left road and careened across our lawn and ened up in my driveway, hitting my parked car Chat Icon ). Can you ask DH if insurance would cover that? I guess it's a little to late, as this happened in July, but I was just curious. TIA.

Wanted to add that the impact was not much, actually the out of control car crashed into my DH's car, pushing his car into mine. So it was not a direct hit.

Okay, I just spoke to my DH. LOL!!! He said that if it is a significant impact it must be replaced, therefore the insurance company will reimburse you. He has worked for 3 companies and they ALL have this rule. He told me that you should call the company again and talk to a manager about it. He thinks that it is rediculous that they won't reimburse you if you have to replace it.

Also, he said that the seat itself says you to replace it if it was in an accident.

It would be stupid if they didn't because if something happens (god for bid!!) and the old seat caused injury to your child, they would have a HUGE lawsuit on their hands for not replacing it.

Just wanted to add that you should destroy the old seat. If you just put it out and it looks like its fine, someone may take it and use it.

Re: Car Seats and accidents!! PLEASE READ!!!

This is why you should NEVER buy a car seat at a garage sale or craigs list. You just don't know if it has been in an accident. it might look perfectly fine but not be.
