car trip activities for 2 yo

Going on a car ride this summer (5 hour trip)...any suggestions (besides DVD player) to keep my 2 year old occupied??

We just did 4 hours (each way) with our DS (age 2.5), non-stop each time, and he was fine. We didn't give him a DVD player or anything. Had snacks for him, his favorite music (Thomas the Train, Jake and the Neverland Pirate, Laurie B, Fresh Beats). We did a lot of talking

It helped though that DS napped about an hour both times. Had he not napped about an hour each time, we would have stopped for him to stretch his legs, etc. We fed DS lunch in the car once and left after lunch on the way back. Your DC will probably be fine. DS had a great time looking at all the big trucks and bridges on the highway.

We really don't like many toys in the car for fear of the potential danger in an accident. Our 2yo has a very active imagination, so we usually let him have a few little figurines or stuffed animals and he goes to town! We also to a LOT of talking, as PP said, and singing. We play CDs and also sing with him. He loves songs that he can have input in, like Old MacDonald and he chooses what is on the farm each verse, or Wheels on the Bus, etc. He usually has a cup of water and a snack cup with cheerios or dried fruit. He will usually nap at some point if we are driving for a while.

We just did a 4 1/2 hour trip to Boston and it was great. Like the pp's said, we had plenty of snacks and her favorite music. We sang and talked and she looked at the trucks, boats, etc. She also napped about 2 hours of the way and we stopped for lunch. You will be fine!! :)
