Career change
I've always wanted to be a teacher and I discussed with DH and he agrees I should go for it. Are there any adult ed. Programs? I'd like to do elementary and I have an associates in nursing, almost a bachelors in nursing too.

You would have to get your bachelors and eventually your masters.
Just to warn you, it is an extremely oversaturated market right now. I got my master's in Elementary Education 6 years ago and have been subbing since, and I'm trying to find something else because I can't afford it anymore. I'm on my third leave replacement (my district pays sub pay for leaves). It may change because a lot of people are retiring due to APPR and a Common Core, but there are hundreds of applicants for open positions.

we are planning to move OOS and the job market is better there because many people are moving there. I've contacted some school already, waiting to here back when they get back for the semester.

ITA...plus so many teachers have been excessed and they remain on the call back list for 7 years. So, a position that opens up within their district needs to be offered to them first, before the district can interview outside candidates.
If you truly want to go for it, I would recommend getting a bilingual extension (Spanish), in addition to the elementary certification. My district has not hired elementary teachers in YEARS. If they start to hire again (once all excessed teachers have been called back), I know they will not consider candidates that are not bilingual. Many of the subs have been there for 6, 7, 8 years. It's tough...I feel so badly for them...some are really good teachers!
My district has, however, hired Special Ed and ESL teachers.

I have to agree with previous posters and I feel terrible NOT encouraging someone who is passionate about something but I would absolutely NOT recommend going into teaching at this point in time. There are just no jobs.
To echo what people said, the few jobs that open up due to retirements are almost always filled with a teacher from that district who was excessed (let go for various reasons -- budget cuts, decrease in student enrollment, etc.) All excessed tenured teachers remain on the PEL (preferred eligibility list) for 7 years, so if ANY position in the entire district in their tenure area opens up, the district is legally bound to offer it to them. If you pass on the offer, you are removed from the PEL and they go to the next person on the list who was excessed. When there are no teachers on a list and a position opens up, the number of applicants is INSANE. I have been a teacher for 7 years and volunteer to sit on interview committees any time we have them, as I enjoy being involved (and am nosey and want a say in my co-workers, when possible!). Last year we had a part time (.6 = 3 classes) HS social studies position open up in my department. For that position we received over 450 applicants. No exaggeration. We ended up finding someone fantastic, but unfortunately due to an unusually small incoming freshmen class, that position no longer exists this year and the teacher is out of a job, once again. It's just not the right time.

If you already have a bachelors you probably don't have to get another one. There are many career change programs out there that are structured to get you all the classes you need within a masters program. You may have to take a few undergrad classes just to fulfill the requirements, but someone will review your transcript for you. But if you are going to school in NY and then plan on moving OOS I would make sure that these programs would get you certified in the state you are going to.
Like other people said I would get a bilingual, special Ed or ell cert if you are going the elementary route. Since you have a bachelors in nursing would you consider science?

Jut retread your post...since you only have an associates you would need a bachelors first. But a lot of states don't require a masters like ny does.

I feel bad discouraging someone as well, but teaching is not the same as it used to be. With that being said, if you are moving out of state and want to still persue it- you will need to finish your bachelor's for sure. You will also need to take into consideration student teaching.

If you are want to teach in elementary school I suggest getting your degree in special ed or ESL. I have been teaching for 11 years and it has become so stressful with the evaluation system. I think many people will be leaving teaching because of the stress and there will be some openings. If you are passionate about teaching go for it. The kids make it all worth it but the demands are unreasonable. GL

I'm going to agree with the general theme here. Teaching is a terrible profession these days and I would not think twice about discouraging someone from starting a program in education. Of course I live here and I can only speak about NY. If you are planning to move OOS then that I suppose is a LITTLE different. But I would do some research in those places first. I know so many people who are resigning from education.....it's just awful.

here is how I counsel my current students when going to college: the only sure fire careers are in healthcare, finance, and mortuary science. I tell them "Things are so bad, people get sick over their poor financial situation and eventually drop dead." 
All kidding aside, the OOS salaries for teachers are terrible. It also depends on where youre going. Do they have a reciprocal aggrement with NY? Will you have to take courses or your licensing exams over if you leave NY?

I would first figure out where I was going to move and then make a decision. Some places do have a shortage of teachers and you might be able to easily get a job. Other states might also just require a bachelors and not a Masters. One thing to think about though is that some states do not have good working conditions for teachers - I would research this before pursuing the career. Pay can also vary drastically from one area of the state to another.

Agreed.... almost everyone I work with is trying to get out of the profession.

There is a nursing educator shortage. In fact, Fatmingdale College was offering so e type of fellowship program for just that about a year ago. They were looking for educators or nurses who wanted to become nursi g educators.
