Career vs Kids
So full of questions today ladies.
So here is my situation. I work for one of the top colleges where i get to go to school for free, very good benefits etc. I am an admin. right now. I am currently trying to finish getting my certificate in event and conference planning to further my already established side career.
Problem is I live in PA and work in NYC. I leave at 6am in the morning. I dont get home until 7:30pm and dont get time to spend with my kids during the work week. Its killing me inside. I feel like a bad parent.
So my question to you is would you stay at the job in NYC or would you look for a job closer to home?
Signed

Re: Career vs Kids
frankly, I'd try to move closer to work... could that be a possibility? maybe live 1/2 way between your job and your dh's job?

Re: Career vs Kids
What are the benefits of you working at that job in NYC?
What will you have to "sacrifice" by not working there?

Re: Career vs Kids
I worked in NYC, making great money, loved my job.
Now I live in NC. I have zero regrets.
Its funny, I found a "what is your real age" quiz online...
my real age is 13!
I have very little stress, tons of balance in my life.
My cousin, a mom who works in NYC with a 2 hour commute home...scored 55.

Re: Career vs Kids
I left my high paying NYC job to be closer to home and see DD more.
Only you can answer that question. It's a battle, I know I tortured myself....

Re: Career vs Kids
if i could afford it, i would be a SAHM. i never thought that i would ever say something like that - i was always very independent and career-oriented.
becoming a mom really changed something in me. they grow up SO fast, and you can't ever get this time back. i told my DH i would move back in with his parents if it meant i could be a SAHM (ok i'm kidding on that one but stilll).
how long will it take you to get that degree? is it something you are willing to put off? can you work part time? there are so many questions you have to ask yourself, good luck

Re: Career vs Kids
with those hours and 2 young kids... i would definitely either look for another job, or try to move closer to work. 13 hours is a long time to be gone no matter what-especially when you have 2 young kids. like somebody else said- you'll never get this time back! i know its tough!

Re: Career vs Kids
How long before you finish your certificate program? Do you have any financial obligations once you are done (ie, must stay with company for a period of time)?
Once you are done with program can you do your side gig on a FT basis? If not, can you find another admin position closer to home?
I'm all for quality of life. I would rather make less money to have have a better quality of life. If you don't have any obligations to your job, then I'd finish the program and weigh options then.
Good Luck

I am trying to finish the certificate by the summer. I have 4 more classes to take then I am done. Right now a class that costs 1060 only cost me 200 bucks. Which is the reason why i want to stay KWIM.

Re: Career vs Kids
I went thru a similar situation in October. I worked from home 4 days a week - Traveled to NYC 1 day a week (if that). Because of everything that happened on Wall Street my company had a layoff. I was approached and told that I could keep my job and take on someone elses job (who was being laid off) but Iwould have to come in 5 days a week to NYC. I walked away - Said thanks but no thanks and left a huge paycheck and a job that I had been at for 9 years.
So to answer your question - For me, my family came first. But only because we were finacially able for me to say no. Weigh your options and see how they come out. Good luck!

If there is no obligation to the company once you are done in the summer, I would definitely consider following the program through. If your passion is with event planning and in the long run having this certification can give you the credibility you need then it's worth IMO. This is also assuming that the side gig will give you a better quality of life and allow you to spend more time with DC while still bringing income and doing something you enjoy.
