Caring for pet after you pass???

Yes I know it's a little morbid, but have you thought who would take care of your pet?

I was at the pet store yesterday and I saw a cat for adoption (a beautiful super friendly one) that the owner had passed away and the family turned him in to a shelter. I was heartbroken and thought who would take my cats. . .

I thought of no one that would willingly take them. . . Chat Icon

Have you thought about it?

I have definately thought about it.

People put things in writing in reguards to children, and we should do it for our pets also, or at least make it WELL known to friends and family what our wishes are.

Pets are like children --- members of our family! It's an important thing to prepare for and think about!

I'm fortunate enough to be surrounded by animal lovers. There's no question as to what would happen to my dogs if something were to happen to DH and I both. My mom or my sister or my aunt would take them in the blink of an eye.

Re: Caring for pet after you pass???

We have trusts for our dogs. The lawyer we had make up our wills suggested it as she is an animal lover also. So my sister will be their caretaker until they pass away & there is a trust set up so that food & vet bills will be taken care off. I talked to her about it & she promises that she will take care of the them should anything happen to us.

I work for an attorney's office. A trust is the best way to go. Line up people that you think will care for your animals. While our pets are like our babies, just like human babies, who should care for them should not just be left up in the air. IT SHOULD BE PUT IN YOUR WILL.

One of clients set up a trust and the person who she left her cats to was to receive 10K a year for the life of the cat (the money followed the cat not the person).

Every night I see cats on the euth list that were surrendered because no arrangements were made for them. Most of the times it is the family members who bring them to the shelter. Chat Icon

Re: Caring for pet after you pass???

My DH would take care of our pets. If something happens to both of us my sister will take care of them. My parents recently adopted a dog and there was a place on the application asking who would care for the dog if they became ill or died. I think it is important for people to set up care for their pets in the event some thing happens to them. Setting up a trust is a good way to insure the animals receive proper care. I never thought of a trust for pets care.

My parents and my best friend have both agreed to take our dogs if my husband and I died at the same time.

My family has discussed that we will care for each other's pets if something happens to any of us.

When my cousin died, my mom took his cat. I would hope that family would pull together and give them a home in case tragedy.

Re: Caring for pet after you pass???

Thankfully I come from a family of animal lovers so I know this would never be an issue. But I do think it's something every pet owner should think about and arrange just in case.
