Carpooling, car seats and 5-8 year olds

I am about to get a car with a 3rd row and this will really help out with carpooling. Do you have extra car seats for the other kids that you drive around? I could get an extra booster seat (the ones where it's just a seat that raises them and you use the car's seatbelt) but some of the kids I will be driving are still not big enough.

What do other parents do?

I always have 2 extra backless boosters in my car, which is all that can fit besides my kids and their seats. They are fine for 5-8 yr olds. I wouldn't want to use a backless as the main booster for a 5 year old but as part of a carpool, I think it's fine.

I would use a backless booster for a 5 yo...By 8, I think they are OK without it for carpool. I have had my niece (8) in my car without one.

See I don't think putting even an (average sized) 8 year old in the car without a booster is safe. Aren't they supposed to be a certain height and weight? When my DD, who is 7 and petite, tries on the regular seatbelt it is too high on her shoulder and doesn't fit properly.

I think a 5yo is too young for a backless booster, if I remember correctly the height and weight is more than my DD was when she was 5 (but she is average to petite).

I'm just worried about safety, especially kids that aren't mine!!

If you look at the ratings, backless boosters are safer han most other boosters as long as the child is big enough. My child was definately big enough since he was 4.5 yrs old. He is on the big side. The key with the backless is to use the little clip on the shoulder strap.

I have been using backless boosters for carpools since kindergarten. Previously, I used a highback booster.

ETA always be sure to have a headrest with the backless.
