Carrier says it has deal with Trump to keep jobs in Indiana
https://www.yahoo.com/news/carrier-says-deal-trump-keep-jobs-indiana-012011271--finance.html
WASHINGTON (AP) — Air conditioning company Carrier Corp. said Tuesday that it had reached a deal with President-elect Donald Trump to keep nearly 1,000 jobs in Indiana. Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence planned to travel to the state Thursday to unveil the agreement alongside company officials.
Trump confirmed the meeting on Twitter late Tuesday, promising a "Great deal for workers!"
Trump spent much of his campaign pledging to keep companies like Carrier from moving jobs overseas. His focus on manufacturing jobs contributed to his unexpected appeal with working-class voters in states like Michigan, which has long voted for Democrats in presidential elections.
The details of the agreement were unclear. Carrier tweeted that the company was "pleased to have reached a deal" with Trump and Pence to keep the jobs in Indianapolis. ...
On the surface, this sounds good. I'll hold my judgement until I hear more about the details of the agreement. I want to say this is something good that he's done, but 50+ years of his personal history and track record tell me that he's done something that will protect the CEO of Carrier, and hurt everyone else, but we'll see....
I'm sure I'll get slammed for not even giving him credit for something good he's done, but "a tiger doesn't change his stripes", so I don't immediately trust something "good" that he's done without more details. He's very famous for making outright lies that are easily disproved time and time again.....

According to GMA this morning, this "deal" is politically linked. If the Executive branch didn't have them by the balls, Carrier would be more based in Mexico than ever before.

Re: Carrier says it has deal with Trump to keep jobs in Indiana
I hope this works out for the regular folks who get to keep their jobs. And while I don't like the idea of jobs being sent overseas, I also have concerns about government stepping into a private business like this. There was so much screaming about government overreach during the campaigns. And again, I want to see jobs saved but wonder about who really gets to benefit. Also, IMO, this is more about Trump getting to pat himself on the back.

They are getting huge tax credits!!!!! Pence gave them incentives from the state so they would stay and make Trump/Pence look good.

I don't have a problem with granting tax credits. Municipalities do it all the time to keep and lure businesses in the area. As long as they are not onerous to the existing taxpayer (like in the case of the IDA credits at Green Acres), if it works to keep businesses from going elsewhere, I support it.

I agree. Something needs to be done to incent these companies to stay. At a company I used to work for, they are outsourcing their help desk jobs to India. In India they pay the help desk techs $9 an hour. Here in the US it's like $25 an hour. Companies are all about making money- so of course they will go where labor is cheapest- unless they have a good financial incentive not to.

I don't always think it is about making Trump/Pence look good; it is a good "look" for the country! Incentives/tax credits are not a new thing and I agree with using this technique to keep business'/work here.
