I find Carter's (real Carter's from the parent company) to run true to size if not big. All my kids were in the exact right size for their age. DS is 3 months old, and is JUST fitting into the 3 mos clothing. They are even a touch big for him. And he is still wearing the NB onesies. DD (4) still fits into the 24 months onesie undershirts!  Yes, she needs the snaps underneath. She wears size 4-5 in clothes, but those onesies still fit!!! Yes, I have to stretch them a bit, but they work.

true to size for all three of my kids
at newborn they wore nb size
at 3 months they started to wear 3 months
at 6 months they started to wear 6 months
etc.
They started wearing 12 months clothes when they turned 1 year!
Same here pretty much. DS has always been in the 50%tile for height/weight and carter's fits him at exactly the right age.

It will depend on the baby. My kids are small but tall and I find they fit true. So probably small for average babies. We started 12 mo at 10 mo and they are still in most now at 16 mo. But they also wear some 18 mo which is a little bug but not swimming. It depends on the outfit too. Foley dresses are more forgiving.

So did you guys buy a lot of clothes prebaby and then just didn't use some or exchange sizer, or did you wait after the baby was born?

I try to buy clearance at the end of seasons for the next year (if I can)...
I have always been able to predict sizes (my daughter runs TTS and my son wore 1 size up) so it was never a problem.
With my son, we had basically an entire years wardrobe from my baby shower.
With my DD, I buy what I need for the season right before the season or when there are BIG sales - or like I said above, at seasons end when there is a clearance sale for the following year!

They have a big sale right now for summer clothes so I'm thinking if I should get DD 3M and summer clothes. She is due at the very end of April/ first week of May and will be NB in May, 3M June-mid to end of July and then I guess I will need some 6M for August and September and those I guess should have longer sleeve options for the evenings.

I think Carter's runs big, especially their onesies. DS2 is a peanut and still in 12-18 month clothes at 19 months old. He can still fit into 12 month onesies from Carter's.

I would say tts. My dd is small and she was a peanut. She woee size newborn coming home. She wore 3 months at 3 months until 6 months. And so on. Even now shes 20 months and she still fits in the white onesies short and long sleeve size 12 months!
Carters has great comfy cotton outfits for baby. And i especially love theirone pieces, sleep n plays, pjs and white short sleeve and long sleeve basic onesies.

I found with my dd's that they run true to size. I asked an employee when dd was born how the sizing works, nb is nb, 3 months is 0-3 months, 6 months is 3-6 months etc etc
