Cashing in Coins for free
Commerce Bank used to have coin machines that were free, even to non-customers.
TD Bank used to have the same thing, but I heard that now they charge non-customers.
Chase Bank said they have to be rolled.
Is there any Bank (or non-Bank) that will take a jar of money and give you cash for free for non-customers?
TIA

Re: Cashing in Coins for free
TD Bank does charge for non-costumers now. I believe it's 6%?
I went in a few months ago with a whole bunch of coins from a coin collection from the school I work in that we held for the victims of the Japanese earthquake. It was clearly from a school collections, the bucket I had was obviously decorated by little kids, and I had the letter from my school that we sent home with the kids. I tried to get them to waive the fee since it was a school collection for a good cause, but they were very rude and wouldn't do it.

I agree. I've been lazy about switching banks, but I need to change to another one. They used to be wonderful, and now they have such terrible customer service - both in person and over the phone!

not for nothing, anybody can say they are a charity and expect something for free. Its very easy to print thing or make up material to say you are "this charity"
nobody else does this for free so don't be mad at someone that use to do it for free that now charges.

It was clear that I was from a school and that this was a fundraiser put together by the kids of the school. The letter sent home was on district letter head and I had my ID badge around my neck. The bank was right across the street from my school. Considering the event we were fundraising for was a major international tragedy, and we were a local school, it would have been nice if the bank waived the fee for this. It was a one time thing it's not like I was in there every other week trying to talk them out of a 6% fee.
I guess my expectations of people are too high for assuming that they would be nice enough to help out a fundraising event of a local school AND victims of such a tragic event.

It's ridiculous that they didn't waive the fee. What kind of person would fake that they were helping earthquake victims just to save a few bucks? Especially a teacher!?! They should be ashamed of themselves.
On a side note, we closed our accounts with them months ago since we noticed their service getting worse and worse.
ETA: People's United Bank (used to be Bank of Smithtown) has a coin machine, but I don't know if they charge non-customers to use it.

Re: Cashing in Coins for free
The Coinstar machines will give you a gift card for no fee and there are a lot of good cards (Home Depot, Stop & Shop). I'd probably use the machine for a Stop & Shop GC because I'd use the gift card and save the cash I'd otherwise spend there for something else.
