Cashing Personal Checks
I have a checking account with Chase & Commerce....can I cash a HSBC personal check at an HSBC branch w/out having a checking account there?
I got a "shady" looking personal check from someone...and I didn't want to risk having to pay a $30 surcharge if it bounces...
TIA

Re: Cashing Personal Checks
I would call your nearest HSBC branch and ask for their policy.
Some banks will do it (making sure you have proper ID) but others wont.
eta: You could aslo call HSBC and ask them if they can verify the funds on the check - they wont tell you how much $$ is in the account, but they will tell you if it is good at present.

Re: Cashing Personal Checks
Hmmm.. I'm not sure, I don't think so. But I remember years ago, when I worked at a car rental company (and I mean YEARS ago), if someone gave us a deposit by check, we would be able to call the bank to make sure there were funds available to cover the check

Re: Cashing Personal Checks
Go to the bank - if the check is from an HSBC bank they will verify the funds and cash it there for you. I did this a few times when I got shady checks. As another poster said, they won't tell you what is in the account, but they will tell you if the check is clear. Otherwise, you could get stuck with all kinds of bouncing fees.

Re: Cashing Personal Checks
I know that Chase won't cash a check for you if you don't have an account there...even if its their check!
Not sure about HSBC though.
