Cat food for urinary problems?

My vet said yesterday that I should switch Penny over to a food made for cats with urinary issues. He specifically recommended checking out some of the higher end brands (Royal Canine, Wellness, Natural Balance). I went to Petco this evening and it seems like none of those brands - or any other of the high and brands for that matter - carry something that is made for those issues.

He said to avoid Purina and stick with the higher end brands... Anyone have any suggestions?

I did find a Purina Pro Life (higher end Purina) that is made for urinary problems but the main ingredient is corn Chat Icon and my vet said protein is better. I just can't win!!!

Re: Cat food for urinary problems?

Our girl cat has a lot of urinary issues ever since she got fixed. She doesn't pee anywhere but her box but when she sits down she leaks about a dime size drop of pee where ever she sits. She can't help it but its gross lol. Our vet put her on the urinary royal canin but you can't get the urinary at the store its only through the vet. We bought a few cans of the wet they were two bucks a can and a medium size bag.

Cat food for urinary problems?

My cat has been on royal canin urinary so for over a year now with no reoccurring issues. You won't find it in petco bc it's prescription food. I think all the higher ends are. I use the dry food and buy the 17 lb bag for about $60. Highly recommend petflow.com but sometimes vets have similar pricing.

Cat food for urinary problems?

My dads cat had bladder and other urinary tract issues and had to be on a low ash prescription food. It wasn't the best otherwise and he gained a lot of weight on it.

Cat food for urinary problems?

I had same problem with my dog. I couldn't find anything outside of the vet that was meant for that problem. I ended up getting the Royal Canine through my vet and it was worth it. I just finally took her off of it because it was a pain getting from the vet and switch her to an all natural food from petco and no problems so far. I was told the same thing as far as the Purina food goes. I had no idea how bad that stuff is for them!

Re: Cat food for urinary problems?

My male cat is on Royal Canin SO moderate calorie dry food. It's prescription only, They (I have two cats) also eat a high moisture grain-free moist food (Halo). I try to get them to eat the moist food rather than the dry. And I have water bowls/fountains all over the place.

I never want to go through that experience (emergency surgery from blockage) and expense ever again.

Oh--the Royal Canin is great to help buffer the pH and all that but it is worthless nutrition wise. My cats did gain weight. They would not eat the Royal Canin Wet food.

Re: Cat food for urinary problems?

We use Purina Pro Plan for Urinary Tract Health.
It's great so far!
Oh and the vet said wet food only for urinary issues- forcing more fluids into their system.

Purina Pro Plan

We also have been on the prescription diet- it was S/D- which is for stone dissolution- when the cat had active stones- once he resolved those they did have a maintainece plan- but the vet said the Purina was just about the same

Thanks! I actually looked into the Purina Pro Plan and Purina One (both for urinary issues) and the ingredients look about the same! Any insight on that? Chat Icon I ended up buying them the Purina One .. although.. so far my big guy isn't a fan...
