Cat Smell ??
Does anyone have any ideas how to get the cat/pet smell out of our house?
DH said it'll get better once we paint, but I thought you may have some ideas.
Thx.

Re: Cat Smell ??
There are cleaning solutions sold at pet stores that remove these odors. I can't remember the name of one I used once that worked very well, but it did have a red and white bottle, if that's any help!
I don't think painting would help really--I'm assuming the smells are in the floors, not on the walls. You may need to get the floors or carpets replaced if it's really bad, but I would try the pet store stuff first and see how that works.

Re: Cat Smell ??
Nature's Miracle works sometimes. Honestly, if there is cat pee in the carpets or floors, the only way to get it out is to replace it.
I wish I could give you better news.
I have replaced several carpets.

Are we talking walls or carpet/floors? You will definitely need to replace the carpet, even Nature's Miracle can only go so far. As far as the walls, just paint. Good luck.

Re: Cat Smell ??
Cin, is it just the smell or are there actual pet stains in the carpets??
Either way your best bet would be to try going to the pet store or the pet aisle of your supermarket, and get something to take out stains and remove the odor. The best thing we've found for Kasey's accidents is Clorox OxiClean.
Good luck, I hope you won't have to replace the carpets!!

Thanks for all the advice, actually there is NO CARPET in the entire house. It's all hardwood floors (we know they had a cat & 2 dogs there) but when you walk in you can smell "cat".
We're having the floors refinished & are repainting everything so I'm hoping that works, but wanted to see what some other fixes may be.

Re: Cat Smell ??
try and put some bowls of vinegar put. the vinegar will take the smells out ofthe air.
Also, after a while, your house will smell like you...if that makes sense...and you wont smell the cat smell anymore

Re: Cat Smell ??
Also - you can clean the floors with the Nature's Miracle before having them done - that should also help the smell.
We have to do the same after we rip up the carpets because the house we are buying has 3 dogs in it now - and you can tell as soon as you walk in.

Re: Cat Smell ??
We had the same problem - We ripped the carpet out of the bedroom and had all the floors refinished throughout the house and it seems to have taken care of the problem.

Once we ripped up the pee stained carpet and then had the hardwoods redone, we don't smell urine anymore. If there are dark spots/black spots on the hardwoods then those are urine stains in the wood. It will only go away so much just so you know. I'm calling it character on the floors. It gives it a older look to the hardwoods, but they still came out nice. Believe me the house we bought, the 3 cats & 3 dogs most have peed and pooped everywhere in that house. And I'm allegic to animals, so after finished the floors I dont' smell a thing anymore. Good Luck!

Re: Cat Smell ??
If you have carpet thats probably the source of the smell so you should rip it out and start over, I had to do that when I moved into the house.

Re: Cat Smell ??
Definitely check the walls, too. If it's cat pee there is most likely pee on the walls/molding! (assuming they had male cats).
If it's really soaked in, you may not be able to get rid of it from the floors. The peeing may have happened over and over in the same spots. I would hope that refinishing them would do it, though.
good luck!

Re: Cat Smell ??
Kilz Heavy Hide Primer
Honestly, if it's in the carpet you will never get rid of it if it's a heavy stain. It may go away for awhile but when it's humid or hot out, it will smell awful. I am speaking from experience.
If you are ripping up the carpet and intend to go over them with either carpet or laminate, and not refinish them, paint the spots on the floor with Kilz Heavy Hide Primer.
Same thing with the walls - Kilz Heavy Hide Primer.
This will also cover the stain and kitty won't want to go back and mark on it again.
